Ancient warforged are constructed out of metal and stone or wood-like fibers. The actual components are unknown, but closely resemble modern components. While modern warforged are based off of the design of Ancient ones, there are still some differences.
Ancient warforged lack the classic three-fingered and toed appendages and instead have more advanced appendages resembling a human hand or foot. While they still tend to be broader than a humanoid , the brow and jaw are more refined to give a less troll-like impression.
Ancient warforged are sexless, though they are sometimes found to be constructed to appear like one gender or the other. Some assume the gender they most closely identify with, others simply ignore the problem of pronoun usage in reference to themselves, accepting what others find easiest.
Ancient warforged are extremely rare. An ancient warforged can be significantly taller, but also weighs massively more. Active models are typically 6 to 7 feet tall and range between 200 and 300 pounds.
The first ancient warforged (and subsequent discovered models) was found underground. The first was discovered by miners, but later expeditions were led by scholars and archeologists. There are only a handful of ancient warforged in existence, and less than a dozen were able to be reactivated. It has been generations since the first was discovered however, and modern warforged have begun to look more and more like their ancient ancestors. Therefore it is unlikely anyone would even know if they met an ancient warforged in the present age.
Scholars have had extreme difficulty prying knowledge from the ancient warforged about the time when they were first created or how they came to be abandoned underground. It is unlikely something was able to erase such knowledge from their mechanical minds, but if they do remember, they are unwilling to discuss it.
Ancient warforged are rare and from a society long dead. As such they sometimes have social traits that appear odd to modern races. It is unknown if this is due to malfunction or ingrained design, but they are rarely able to shed all of these oddities.
Ancient Warforged Names
An ancient warforged may have a designation engraved on it or documented near it when discovered. Some choose to keep these designations as personal names or adapt them to do so. (such as "DV-5" becoming "Dave") Others have no given name and choose their own similarly to modern warforged.
Ancient Warforged Traits
Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution and Charisma scores increase by 2.
Age. An ancient warforged is of almost indeterminable age unless it either remembers it's entire lifespan, or there is documentation accompanying it. Theoretically a modern warforged is immortal barring extreme abuse or lack of maintenance, and presumably this holds true of the ancient warforged as well.
Alignment. Ancient warforged do not suffer the same draws toward specific alignments that modern ones do, however, once chosen, their given alignment is nearly impossible to change.
Size. Ancient warforged seem to range as widely in size as their creators did, but surviving models are nearly all medium or large in size.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet. Ancient and modern warforged are both immune to exhaustion penalties. However, if either go more than 3 days without taking a long rest, they automatically shut down and loose their 'Unsleeping Watcher' trait until 8 hours have passed and they reactivate.
Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Living Construct. You are a living construct. You don't need to eat, drink, breath, or sleep, but you still gain the benefits of consumable items. You are immune to exhaustion, yet shut down after an active period of three days without rest. You are immune to poison, sleep effects, and cold unless inflicted as attack damage in which case you take half damage (heat affects you normally). You also gain the full benefits of healing spells and effects(Like the cure wounds spell), the spending of hit dice at the end of a short rest, and the full effects of a long rest. An ancient warforged inherently has an AC of 12 + its proficiency bonues. During a long rest an Ancient Warforged may don armor over it's body that will then bond to it. This armor acts normally except that it cannot be removed without taking another long rest. It also prevents attaching new warforged modifications until a long rest is taken.
Warforged Resolve. It's difficult to take you down, even when you are faltering. You have advantage on death saving throws, and you know the blade ward cantrip.
Living weapon. You are never unarmed. You can roll a d4 in place of the normal damage of your unarmed strike.
Machine mind. An ancient warforged has a constructed mind incapable of forgetting. You cannot forget information you are exposed to and can faithfully reproduce any written or spoken message even if you do not understand it.
Faithful Companion. You exude an aura of servitude. You were built to serve, you have proficiency in Deception and Persuasion skills.
Ancient History. You are proficient in History when applying it to the history from before your reactivation.
Maintenance. You know the mending cantrip. If you have access to artisan tools you can use them with proficiency. You can use all warforged parts, armor, and weapons with proficiency as well as interface with certain ancient artifacts.
Languages. You know how to read, speak, and write Common along with one other language of your choice.
