Abyssal Alchemist[edit]

Turning lead to gold? Bahahaah, I can turn demon essence in pure, undiluted power.
—Khandarak, dwarf abyssal alchemist

The abyssal alchemist is an alchemist that has been seduced by the dark, dread power of the abyss and has succumbed to evil. They've delved into research best left alone, and learned to harness demonic essence. Abyssal alchemists that earn the enmity of their community are often hung by lynch mobs, or burned at the stake as witches. Paladins and other holy characters in particular find abyssal alchemists to be a dangerous and repugnant menace to be eliminated. This has resulted in abyssal alchemists being secretive and distrustful of revealing their powers to others. It's not uncommon to find abyssal alchemists in cults dedicated to serving demon lords or chaotic evil deities.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Abyssal Alchemist.

Spellcasting: At each level, you gain new spells per day and an increase in caster level (and spells known, if applicable) as if you had also gained a level in a spellcasting class to which you belonged before adding the prestige class level. You do not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained. If you had more than one spellcasting class before becoming a Abyssal Alchemist, you must decide to which class to add each level for the purpose of determining spells per day, caster level, and spells known.

Black Alchemy (Su): Instead of using XP to cast spells, a Abyssal Alchemist may decide to use demonic essence instead. Each CR worth of demonic essence replace 10 XP used. This can be used both in item creation and spellcasting.

Entrap Fiendish Essence (Su): As a full-round action, a Abyssal Alchemist may harvest part of a dead demon soul. She gain 1/2 the dead demon CR worth of demonic essence (see black alchemy).

Fiend Transmutation (Ex): Gain a bonus to DC equal to abyssal alchemist level to all transmutation spell, work only against outsider with the evil subtype.

Recycle Fiends (Ex): At 2nd level, as a full-round action, a class may recycle part of a dead fiend. She gain 50 gp/CR worth of material components usable instead of any respective material components for any spells or item creation.

Vile Essence (Su): At 2nd level, all spells casted by an abyssal alchemist are affected by corrupt spell metamagic feat for free without any increase in casting time.

Harvest Essence (Su): At 3rd the class is able to fully harvest a demon soul, when using entrap fiendish essence she gain the ability to extract full CR instead of 1/2 CR worth of demonic essence.

Soul Alchemy (Su): At 4th level the abyssal alchemist gain the ability to cast spell-like abilities of any demon she possess the essence. She is restrained to the demon daily limits and several other limitation. She cannot use the spell-like abilities of a demon with a higher CR than her and every time she use one spell-like ability the particular fiend's CR drop by 1. If she spent the fiends daily limit of all spell-like abilities or reduce the demon CR to 0 the soul is completely consumed and utterly unusable.

Soul Corruption: Manipulating fiendish energy and transmutation demon soul finally shown it effect on the abyssal alchemist, at 5th level her type change to outsider and she gain the demon subtype. However the class alignment does not change. The abyssal alchemist may however be raised as her former type.

Campaign Information[edit]

Playing a Abyssal Alchemist[edit]

Combat: Abyssal alchemists serve the same roles as other spellcasters in combat. They dislike getting into melee combat with their enemies.

Advancement: Abyssal alchemists are best served by staying with this prestige class until they reach the maximum level. After maxing out this prestige class, advancing in their original arcane spellcasting class is recommended. All ability score increases are recommended for the ability score they use to cast their spells. Item creation and metamagic feats are strongly recommended.

Resources: Though some abyssal alchemists do work together, most prefer to practice their art alone when it comes to adventuring. For adventuring companions they prefer members of martial classes to keep them safe in combat, divine spellcasters of non-good deities to heal their wounds, and rogues to deal with traps. Some abyssal alchemists run alchemy shops and sell normal alchemical goods by day, and by night cater to more dark and sinister wares. Abyssal alchemists frequently trade with each other to get what they need and to get rid of excess supplies gathering dust.

Abyssal Alchemist in the World[edit]

You fear our dark powers, as well you should. We embrace the limitless power of the abyssal planes and gather demonic essence to do with as we see fit! You simple-minded fools could never comprehend the true genius of our discoveries. Now, strap them to the sacrificial altars, minions!
—-Keledorn Wavmott, dwarven warmage abyssal alchemist (shortly before sacrificing a group of meddling teenagers that tried to stop his plans)

Abyssal alchemists fill the same niches as other evil arcane spellcasters.

Evil NPCs generally like the abyssal alchemists and seek them out as allies or hire them as mercenary spellcasters. Good NPCs that learn of their nature will shun them out of fear and/or revulsion. Some good NPCs may try to arrest them, and the more fanatical ones may try to lynch them on the spot.

Abyssal Alchemist Lore[edit]

Characters with ranks in Knowledge (Arcana) can research abyssal alchemists to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.

Knowledge (Arcana)
DC Result
11 Abyssal alchemists are a type of arcane caster.
16 Abyssal alchemists are evil spellcasters who deal with demons.
21 These spellcasters harvest the demonic essence of demons.
26 Abyssal alchemists are slowly corrupted by their harvested demonic power.

Abyssal Alchemist in the Game[edit]

Abyssal alchemists serve as stereotypical bad guys who have dwelled too deep into the evil alchemy.
