Why would you take Guard when everyone can already take the {{5e|Dodge Action|Dodge}} action? Imposing disadvantage on attack rolls is usually worth at least a +5 to AC. (Coincidentally, Cautious Defense would stack with the Dodge action, and I'm not sure if that's balanced or not.) - [[User:Guy|Guy]] ([[User talk:Guy|talk]]) 11:09, 3 May 2017 (UTC)<br />

Oh, I thought Dodge did somethind else. Cautious Defense + Dodge is probably ok because it's supposed to make defense easier, but Guard is kind of pointless.<br />

"When you make a melee attack, before you make the attack roll, as a bonus action, you can choose to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll. If the attack hits, you subtract your proficiency bonus from the attack's damage."<br />
Your proficiency bonus already factors into your attack roll. When making an attack normally, you roll a d20 and add your ability modifier and your proficiency bonus if you're proficient with that weapon. Do you mean you get to add your proficiency bonus a second time? Also, your proficiency already does not go into your attack's damage. The damage roll normally is the weapon's die (d4, d6, d8, etc...) plus your ability modifier.</div>Rial13
