Woods Haven Part 1[edit]

Intended for four level level 1 players 3+ adventurers.

this is part one of a starter quest

  • Prep Time 1 hour
  • Play Time 2 to 6 hours

Quest Introduction[edit]

Day one: Next stop is Woods Haven, a noisy town with a river on the far side. This river pours four water wheels that run sawmills. The mills share a giant log yard, where the logs are stored after making their way down stream, (this could lead you to thinking that all the saw mills are owned by the same person).

   The first person they will see in the town is a portly man (Lord Mayor Sir Nickels), very well dressed. He is coming out of the toy store and he has two men following him, each carrying a large stuffed toy animal, a tiger and a bear. A 4th man exits the store after the others, a big tall man 6ft 6in with armor, a sword on his back and one at his waist. This guy looks like he knows how to fight, he has a slight belly like he’s been living the good life for a while. (The 3 men with the lord are two 1st level fighters and a 5 level fighter named sir John two swords Quin).The portly man will greet the players, he may be the most cheerful man you will ever meet. "WELCOME to Woods Haven I hope you will be staying for a while we have many fine shops and some of the finest ale in the kingdom. I am Lord Mayor Sir Nickels, the inn (The Broken Saw) has many fine rooms you will find them most comfortable if you chose to stay there," he said.

-If the characters are pleasant he will invite them to his manor house for his weekly feast on Saturday. -Lord Mayor Sir Nickels will ask the players to go hunting with him, this will happen at the feast or later he will send them an invite.

History[edit]

Day one: Town Rumors: Rumors are mostly heard at the inn. Rumor #1 Goblins have been seen near town but no one can confirm this rumor. Rumor #2 There is some talk about the toy makers' son; most people think he ran away, he was 15 but acted like a 9 year old so many of the other kids made fun of him. Rumor #3 People have had a lot of small random things stolen, the items have mostly been taken by a 'fairy thief' people joke, for they seem to be stealing small worthless items. A lady said my spoon were taken. Rumor #4 The supply wagon that was sent to the logging camp disappeared and no one knows where Ernie the driver is. Most people think he stole the wagon and went to the capital to sell the supplies; his wife had left him and he is a terrible drunk. Lord Mayor Sir Nickels was not happy he had to send another wagon of supplies; he sent his 2 half elf’s rangers to investigate the missing supplies and loggers.

Day two in town: The next day rumors in the bar are of a group of lumber jacks that didn’t return from logging two days ago. The Lord Mayor Sir Nickels has sent his two half elf body guards to help find the missing men.

Hook[edit]

The toy maker’s son disappeared,

goblins in the oak tree,
the lord wants to go hunting, 
trouble in the logging camp,
toys in town come alive and kidnap children (this happens later)

Background[edit]

The lord is the Owner of the saw mills, logging camp and most of the town. Goblin raids on logging camp supplies. Loggers have gone missing. Two half elf’s have been sent to investigate the missing supplies and loggers, eventually the two half elf’s go missing with a group of logging camp workers. The lord sends dwarf mercenary’s to help the logging camp they two will run in to trouble. The logging camp will be abandoned and goblin raiders will hunt the dwarfs on worgs. The lord is an avid hunter and will offer to pay the party to come on a hunt for his protection see hunting adventure. Eventually the lord’s daughter is taken by her evil toys from the town toy maker and will need to be rescued or will end up with the goblins.

Stage One: first day & night in woods haven evil toy encounter[edit]

The towns stores are your standard except for the toy shop all toys are handmade. If entered the toy store a nice woman in her late 40's asked if she can help you. An old man in his 50 comes out from the back room wood shavings on his work cloths and said to a party member that is female or the party member with the highest charisma you’re a pretty one would you like one of my toys he hands the party member a wooden toy figure(the toy is 3.5 ft. tall made from wood with movable joints) take it no charge for such a hansom adventure such as you if they dont take it he forces them by leaving the toy in there arms. (The idea is to get at least one toy in the groups possession) The toy maker’s wife does not look happy. She said we will go broke you have lost your mind. The toy maker skips back to the back room singing so sad to bad so sad to bad. If spoken to the woman said I am so sorry he hasn’t been the same sine our son disappeared in the woods 4 months ago she tears up a little then she asks if she can help you find anything. If the party offers any assistance she will go upstairs to their living quarter and bring back a family portrait their son is 12 in the picture but he was 15 when he disappeared.

The inn from the street you can smell something cooking and it smells like heaven. The food here is excellent breakfast is known of its wild boar stakes and oven roasted tomatoes and eggs the lunch meat pies are famous cheap and filled with yummy gravy dinner menu has stag roast, pheasant, just to name a few items. Most days the mill workers come here for a pint of ale and lunch and family’s eat here for a night out dinner, there is a back room with some light gambling its darker in the back room so adventures or people passing through that don’t want to be notices would be more likely to drink and eat in here. On Sundays many of the locals play bingo this game is sponsored by the local sawmill and grand prize is a day off with pay. Alinda an elf sits in this back room of the inn and doesn't want to be bothered she will get to know the party if they approach her. She sits watching everything and everyone.she is (Secretly a Drow) this NPC will come in to play later. (this is the only time she will be seen in town) The First night If a party member gets a woodcarving evil toy, the toy maker’s gift looks throw the adventures stuff when they are sleeping the toy makes a move silently check +5 against the players listen check -2 for sleeping if any one wakes up and moves the toy will lay still but if someone can see in the dark and pretend to be a sleep they may see the toy going throw their bags. If the toy is discovered and can’t fight its way out of trouble it will destroy its self normally by jumping in to the nearest fire the only thing left is the small shard of black rock.

Stage Two: Day two in woods haven the oak tree goblins[edit]

An Invite to the Lord Mayor Sir Nickels feast comes for all party members by the way of messenger the feast is tomorrow. If checking around town the players might check out the old oak that the toy makers son disappeared at ( other children where with him when he disapperd they have little info other that they left him at the old oak tree)if the players go to the old oak tree they may find the two goblin archers hiding 30 f.t up in the tree with a spy glass to keep an eye on the town. the goblins will try to stay hidden in the tree if seen they will shoot down trying to kill anyone below. if captured they say all humans going to die soon.

Stage Three: 3rd day a feast at the lords monor house[edit]

Day three. Day off the feast a grand party at some point the lord ask the party to go boar hunting he said he knows of a cave bear den that he’s been itching to hunt. Side note the group meet the loads daughter a delightful 13 year old. (Charmed I am shore) Party rumors. Lord Mayor Sir Nickels said he has sent for some mercenary’s to check out the logging camp deep in the forest, they will be here in the morning Nickels will speak with the dwarfs before he leaves to go hunting he sends them to the logging camp. (Dwarfs from the mountains are coming to protect the logging camp they will be too late)The lord is an avid hunter and will offer to pay the party to come on a hunt for his protection see hunting adventure

Stage Four: Day 4 to go hunting or stay[edit]

If the party goes’ hunting it will take day 4,5,6. Or not the party may stay in town. if the players go hunting, The hunt should take about three days. See Woods haven hunt encounters. the morning of day 4 starts in the inn where 7 dwarfs meet lord Nickels he sends them to the logging camp. he will also pick up the players if any are going hunting with him.
