Way of the Spear[edit]

The Way of the Spear focuses on mastering the art of two handed spear combat. While the spear may seem like a simple weapon to use, true mastery is difficult to achieve but yields incredible results.

The Way of the Spear

Upon following this monastic tradition at 3rd level, your skill with the spear has increased to the point that your weapon damage increases to 1d8 while wielding a spear. The damage increases to 1d10 at 7th level, to 1d12 at 11th level, and to 2d6 at 17th level.

Spear Versatility

At 3rd level, you may choose to deal slashing, piercing, or bludgeoning damage while wielding a spear.

Spear Stances

At 3rd level, you learn special spear stances, that you can use to gain certain advantages in combat. While wielding a spear, as part of your attack action, you can assume one of the following spear stances:

  • Yamārashi Stance. When you assume this stance, you begin quick whirling motions with your spear, giving fewer options for enemies to attack you from. You gain a bonus of +2 to your AC.
  • Tora Stance. When you assume this stance, your attacks have much more force behind them. You can add +2 to your damage rolls on all attacks made with a spear.
  • Hoippu Stance. When you assume this stance, you take full advantage of the spear's length to attack from afar. The reach of a spear you are wielding increases by 10 feet.
Spear Adept

At 6th level, your spear attacks become more dangerous when augmented with your ki. You can spend 1 ki point to select one of the following effects when you make an attack with a spear:

  • You can give yourself advantage on all attack rolls made with a spear during this turn.
  • After making a successful attack against a target you can, as a reaction, make another attack against a creature adjacent to the target, as long as the creature is within range.
  • You can cause a creature large or smaller you hit with a spear to make a Strength saving throw against your ki save DC. On a failure, the target is knocked prone and takes 1d8 bludgeoning damage.
  • You can cause a creature you hit with a spear to make a Strength saving throw against your ki save DC. On a failure, the target is knocked 15 feet away.
Whirlwind Attack

At 11th level, you can use your action and spend 1 ki point to make a number of melee attacks against any creatures within range equal to proficiency bonus or your Wisdom modifier (whichever is higher).

One with the Spear

At 17th level, when you are hit by an attack, you can use your reaction to reduce the damage taken by your Spear Damage die + your Dexterity modifier for all attacks this turn.

If you reduce the damage of the attack to 0, as part of the same reaction you can make a spear attack against the attacker if you are within range.

You may also add your Wisdom modifier to the damage rolls of all attacks made with spears.
