Introduction[edit]

The Colonial Marines are likely best known for their use of the M41A pulse rifle, a futuristic assault rifle with an under slung grenade launcher, and for the M56 smart gun, a large machine gun which is actually worn by the user using a sophisticated harness mechanism. Also featured in the movie Aliens are the M240 flamethrower, the M4A3 pistol and the UA-571C Sentry Guns. In this article I give you the information to use the USCMC's Weapons in a D20 Modern setting.

The VP70 is a German made standard handgun for USCM infantry and officers that fires light armor piercing rounds, and is favored for its high payload despite a short maximum effective range. The VP70 proves ineffective against the thick hide and armor or the xenomorph.

M56 Smart Gun[edit]

Weapon Category: Heavy Weapon
Damage: 2d12
Critical: 20
Damage Type: Ballistic
Range Increment: 150ft
Rate Of Fire: A
Magazine: 200 Drum

The Smart Gun is used by the heavy weapon soldiers or "Smart Gunners".

The length of the weapon is 122 cm, with a straight rear firing grip and a fore firing grip. In addition, a cocking handle is mounted on the right side of the gun, for manual cocking once a new ammo drum has been attached (reliability drops to UR on the first trigger pull if the weapon is left to cock automatically). The gun is mounted on a servo-assisted gyro-stabilization arm attached to an armored torso harness. The weapon has an inbuilt smart-targeting system, consisting of a targeting processor in the harness, infrared sensors in the headset and above the barrel of the gun, and the gyro-balancing servo-arm. When a target is designated through the headset and barrel sensors, the servo-arm immediately moves the gun to track the target. Changing targets is done simply by directing the gun toward a new target. The electronic pulse action allows great control over the rate of fire of the weapon, which is controlled by a toggle switch on the fore grip. It can fire a three or four round burst and has a full-auto fire mode of 60 rounds.

Ithaca Model 37 Stakeout Shotgun[edit]

The staple assault rifle of the USCMC infantry is the M41-A Pulse Rifle, and used by every grunt with the exception of the heavy weapon officers, or "Smart Gunners". The M41 uses electronic pulse action to fire, controlled directly from the trigger. The internal mechanism, including the rotating breech, is mounted on free-floating rails within a carbon-fiber jacket. This assembly is recoil dampened to reduce the effects of muzzle climb during burst and full automatic fire. From the thumb selector, the weapon can be set to selective, four-round burst, or full automatic fire, the latter allowing a rate of fire up to the weapon's cyclic rate of 900 rpm.

Lacrima 99 Rifle (Assault Rifle)[edit]

Weapon Category: Long Arms
Damage: 2d8 Slug Damage or 3d6 Electric
Critical: 20
Damage Type: Ballistic or Electric
Range Increment: 70ft Slugs, 40ft Electric
Rate Of Fire: S, A
Magazine: 20 Box Slugs, 10 Int Electric Charge
Size: Large
Weight: 1lb
Purchase DC: 19
Restriction: Mil (+3)

Also known as a "Burner" or "Shockrifle" the Lacrima 99 Rifle was a primary weapon for the United Systems Military . As apposed to conventional projectile weapons the Lacrima 99 Rifle uses a powerful electric charge that can disable or even kill a target. However, if the situation warranted, the Lacrima 99 Rifle can fire solid slugs. Also a torch device can be attached providing better firing conditions in low light areas.

M42A Sniper Rifle[edit]

Weapon Category: Long Arms
Damage: 2d12
Critical: 19-20
Damage Type: Ballistic
Range Increment: 120ft
Rate Of Fire: Single
Magazine: 10 Box
Size: Large
Weight: 8lb
Purchase DC: 22
Restriction: Mil (+3)

The M42A is essentially a highly modified M41 Pulse Rifle, having been customized for use by the Marine Scout/Snipers. One rifle is issued per company, though normally it's used at the battalion level in groups of up to 4 Scout/Snipers.

The M42A is configured in a bullpup style, having the 10-round magazine located behind the hand grip. The butt-plate can be adjusted on an individual basis using the 6 supplied spacers. A folding bipod is placed on top of the barrel hand guard to prevent it from affecting accuracy. Internal components are nearly totally compatible with the M41, though the M42 is chambered for match-grade ammo. The barrel is free-floating and protected with a ventilated hand guard; the barrel can also be fitted with a flash suppressor or muzzle brake depending on the situation.

Normal ammunition is a match-grade HEAP round with a maximum effective range of 2,950 meters. A long-range ball round is also available with an effective range of 3,800 meters. The standard M250 Smartgun round can also be used with no modification, though it's effective range is less than 2,000 meters; fuse adjustment is accomplished via a separate selector switch.

A combined multi-spectral 20x passive scope is mounted on top of the receiver. It displays a composite image based on visual, IR, and EM emissions. It can also be augmented with input from the local sensor matrix, such as motion trackers, radar, lidar, and IR sensors. A classified control system allows the Scout/Sniper to tie the rifle into the local sentry gun matrix and readjust sentry gun firing arcs as necessary.

M112 HIMAT[edit]

Weapon Category: Heavy Weapon
Damage: 10d8
Critical: ----
Damage Type: Special
Range Increment: 15,840 FT
Rate Of Fire: Single
Magazine: 1 Int
Size: Huge
Weight: 20lb
Purchase DC: 30
Restriction: Mil (+3)

The HIMAT (Hypervelocity Intelligent Missile, Anti-tank) is a man-portable "brilliant" weapon with a range greater than 5 km. An extremely versatile weapon, it gives commanders many options for deployment and use.

The main element is an 11.3 kg single-shot, self-contained, disposable launcher equipped with bipod and baseplate. The bipod can be set for any angle between 0 and 90 degrees.

The missile itself is a small two-stage round with a multi-sensor seeker. Upon launch, the missile is ejected from it's tube vertically by the first-stage motor where it's control vanes orient it towards the target. The second-stage then fires, accelerating the missile nearly instantaneously to Mach 4.5. The seeker consists of a millimeter-wave radar and an aerial that allows "home-on-jam" capabilities. The seeker scans the target during it's approach and determines it's exact type and configuration from memory. If the target turns out to be friendly, the missile will steer itself away and self-destruct. If the target is hostile, the seeker will determine the optimum impact point and steer the missile towards it.

The warhead is comprised of a 15 cm tungsten rod surrounded by high explosive. The explosive is detonated just before impact, launching the rod into the target's armor, similar to a tank SABOT round. The combination of the missile's hypervelocity and the explosive force allows the tungsten rod to penetrate all but the strongest armor.

The HIMAT has some success against aerial targets, such as low-flying drop ships, helicopters, and VTOL aircraft. A multi-purpose warhead is being designed for use against both ground and aerial targets.

A new infantry sight that replaces the motion tracker with a millimeter-wave radar is being introduced to allow use against non-moving targets such as bunkers and supply dumps. However, the new sight will only be effective once the new multi-purpose warhead is introduced.

M83A2 SADAR[edit]

Weapon Category: Heavy Weapon
Damage: 10d6
Critical: ----
Damage Type: Special
Range Increment: 3281 FT
Rate Of Fire: Single
Magazine: 3 Int
Size: Huge
Weight: 20lb
Purchase DC: 30
Restriction: Mil (+3)

The M83A2 SADAR (Shoulder-launched Active-homing Disposable Anti-tank Rocket) is a lightweight one-shot anti-armor weapon capable of engaging enemy vehicles at ranges up to 1,000 m. Fully disposable, the rocket's launcher is discarded after firing, whilst the rocket, a fire-and-forget weapon, guides itself toward the target. When stowed, the SADAR system consists of a watertight carbon-fiber composite blast tube, inside of which is an aluminum launch tube containing the missile and guidance electronics. The weapon is cocked by unlatching the forward ring of the blast tube and pulling the inner launch tube forwards until it locks. A trigger assembly and thermal acquisition sight are then flipped into position, and the weapon activated by pushing a charge button on the trigger grip. From this point the weapon can be sighted and fired from the shoulder.

The M83 acquires and tracks targets with a cooled infrared imaging seeker mounted in the rocket's nose. When the charge button is pressed, the inert IR seeker is cooled to it's operating temperature within two seconds and begins feeding images to the operator's thermal acquisition sight. The seeker remains charged for twenty minutes, after which the rocket may only be fired unguided. When a target enters the acquisition sight, the operator can lock the seeker's field of view, the weapon can be launched at it.

M78 PIG[edit]

Weapon Category: Heavy Weapon
Damage: 5d8
Critical: ----
Damage Type: Fire
Range Increment:16000 FT
Rate Of Fire: Single
Magazine: 10 Power pack
Size: Huge
Weight: 34lb
Purchase DC: 30
Restriction: Mil (+3)

The M78 PIG (Phased-plasma Infantry Gun) is a man-portable anti-armor weapon. Weighting 15.2 kg in its entirety, the PIG consists of two parts: the gun and its power pack. The M78 is a 15 mW phased plasma system firing vaporized Cadmium Telluride pellets from a 30 round feed. The fast-discharge system powering the gun's laser and magnetic coil is fed from a 4 mW hydrogen fuel cell in the power pack. The firing cycle takes 3 seconds, most of which is taken up by the powering up of the discharge generator. The penetrating power of the system is considerable, and it is claimed to be able to breach the flank armor of a heavy tank at 1,000 meters.

M5 RPG[edit]

Weapon Category: Heavy Weapon
Damage: 8d8
Critical: ----
Damage Type: Special
Range Increment: Special
Rate Of Fire: Single
Magazine: 1 Int
Size: Huge
Weight: 5lb
Purchase DC: 30
Restriction: Mil (+3)

The M5 rocket propelled grenade system is a small reloadable shoulder-launched weapon. The launcher consists of a 140 cm steel alloy tube weighing 2.3 kg, with a rear backblast vent incorporating backblast diffusers, trigger mechanism and 4x power telescopic sight. Each 2.2 kg round is a 60 mm hypervelocity spin-stabilized rocket with an impact-fused supercritical HEAT warhead. The rounds are carried separately and hand-loaded into the launch tube. Sighted visually, the system has an accurate range of approximately 400 m and a maximum range of around 2,000 m. Though the rocket's warhead has little chance against medium and heavy tank armor, it has proven popular and effective for use in it's secondary role against infantry in bunkers and building strongpoints.

Special[edit]

Special Damage[edit]

When the HIMAT, SADAR or the M5 RPG hits its target, it explodes like a grenade or other explosive, dealing its points of damage to all creatures within a 10-foot radius (Reflex save DC 18 for half damage). Because its explosive features a shaped charge designed to penetrate the armor of military vehicles, the LAW ignores up to 10 points of hardness if it strikes a vehicle, building, or object. However, this only applies to the target struck, not to other objects within the burst radius.

The Himat and The Sadar has a minimum range of 30 feet. If fired against a target closer than 30 feet away, it does not arm and will not explode.

Special Range[edit]

The M5 has a range of 2 km (6560 ft) maximum but when shooting a target more then 1312 metres (4305 ft) away roll a percentile dice 0-25% North 26-50% East 51%-75 South and 76-100% West and 1D6. The D6 represents how many squares off the RPG is and the percentile represent which direction.
