Themed Spell Lists (5e Other)

From D&D Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

If you're making a spell caster that can cast spells on a particular theme, you can use the lists below to quickly see what might be appropriate spells. This should save you some time if you're creating the umpteenth elemental wizard or whatever. Consider pruning your selection as appropriate. For example bones of the earth could be considered a spell unique to druids, and flame strike could be considered divine, so consider omitting them if your class is an arcane spellcaster.

  • Neutral spells tend to not belong to any of the categories listed below. These spells are essentially miscellaneous unless another group is introduced to further diversify the classification.
  • Water. spells tend to deal with water, and sometimes refer to liquids in general, like acid, poison, oil, etcetera. Ice is a subgroup of Water.
  • Earth. spells tend to deal with earth, meaning it deals with sand, dirt, metal, stone, lava, asteroids, etcetera. Metal is a subgroup of Earth.
  • Fire. spells tend to deal with heat-based spells like fire, but because fire is a substance similar to plasma, Lightning is often included as a subgroup.
  • Air. spells tend to deal with air, and phenomena that relate to air, like sound, wind, and any spell that deals with the rejection of gravity.
  • Light. spells tend to deal with light, and thus any spells that deal with radiance are included.
  • Darkness. spells tend to deal with darkness and shadows.
  • Psychic. spells tend to deal with minds, meaning it deals with telekinesis, telepathy, some forms of divination and mind control.
  • Life and Death spells tend to deal with the concept of creatures being alive or dead, as well as the addition or removal of health. Organic spells are a subgroup and tend to deal with the manipulation or interaction of living beings, which is widespread. It deals with bacteria, fungus, plants, and animals. It can be incredibly open-ended, as it can also include artificial life and the undead.
