Talk:Wraithguard (5e Creature)

From D&D Wiki

Numerous issues:

  • States that it has telepathy, but lists no range.
  • Vortex Blast should have something along the lines of "Recharge X-Y" or "Recharge X", not a fixed turn number.
  • Multiattack should be with the actions. SirSprinkles (talk) 17:43, 29 June 2017 (MDT)

Not to mention that the hit points and passive Perception are also incorrect. SirSprinkles (talk) 17:44, 29 June 2017 (MDT)

I'll take a crack at fixing this. I'm a fan of 40k, and I'd hate for an article based on something from it to be deleted. --SlaadSack (talk) 08:54, 20 July 2020 (MDT)
Summary of changes
  • Reduced AC from 20 to 16 and hit points from 240 to 125. Also corrected hit point calculations while I was at it.
  • Increased speed from 15 ft. to 20 ft.
  • Increased Dexterity from 5 to 8.
  • Gave it some saving throws.
  • Changed psychic damage from immunity to resistance, and removed the Psychic Absorption trait. I don't believe wraithguards are healed from getting hit with psychic blasts in 40k, though I could be wrong.
  • Added resistance to necrotic damage.
  • Added blindsight, since it can see despite not having any eyes.
  • Corrected passive Perception.
  • Reduced CR from 18 to 10 (see below).
  • Added Turn Resistance and a feature that makes it simultaneously a construct and an undead.
  • Renamed Hammer Fist to slam attack, lowered its damage die from 2d10 to 2d8, removed the unexplained psychic damage that the attack originally inflicted.
  • Removed the Psionic Blast weapon attack. I've found no evidence that wraithguards have the ability to make psychic attacks, and their weapons don't seem to work that way.
  • Renamed Vortex Blast to Wraithcannon after the actual name of their weapon in 40k, increased the recharge period from 4-6 to 5-6, corrected its damage calculations, reduced its duration to 1 round, lowered its save DC while also forcing creatures within the area to make two saves.

With these values, my calculations for the challenge rating worked out to a 12 Defensive CR and an 8 Offensive CR, for an average of 10. I intentionally aimed for a CR in that ballpark to bring it in line with similar creatures from other 40k factions such as rubric marines, terminators, lychguards, and so on. --SlaadSack (talk) 14:55, 22 July 2020 (MDT)
