6. Obsolete. to hand around, as a bowl of liquor at table.

Physical Description

Despite all of the growing concerns, these guys, at least vary in color, shape and size through out their life. It is said no two trollings ever end up the same. So it seems to be true. They are born super tiny, and thus escape from the evil trolls at a really young age, some how for a few days its like an adult survival skill sets in as they rush away and into some cover to hide and eat and grow and grow some more. Eating bugs and mushrooms and such at first, barely higher than a blade of grass they grow quickly, and suffer the pains of it. This is where trollings develop their singing, to keep their mind off the pain. They continue to grow throughout their life, as the story tellers allow.

(insert image as you please.)

>,///;>

History/Society

As mentioned, they are like miscarried troll off spring, so it is said anyway. Not sure if its true. It sure seems so. They have no culture or society generally, yet anyway. However they do tend to stay poor and sleep in the poorest of places and are accused of being demons by weak minded peoples.

>,///;>

Trolling Names

Many names exist for trolls and their kin, fitting whatever form they happen to be in, since as it is said no two trolling's are the same. The individual names are from their aspirations and hopes to be like. Their names tend to change from time to time.

Trolling Traits

  • Ability Score Increase. Constitution +1d4, Charisma 50% bonus/penalty 1d4.
  • Age. Unknown. They leave their mother immediately, and then begin to survive on whatever they can put their mouth on.
  • Alignment. Open and varied. Chaotic Neutral with good tendencies. It is rare for one to be lawful, regardless it happens.
  • Size. Tiny to Huge for player races. Restricted by level for balance playability. It is suggested that players start out small to large depending on their strength appropriateness.

Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet. Some may adapt other modes later via the story teller.

  • Troll Regeneration. As per the creature, they may regenerate their constitution modifier per round in hit points, as well as reattach or regrow limbs.
  • Troll Singing. When they sing they are able to ignore minor pain, damage or discomfort. They can take no major actions during this unless they are a bard/monk/cleric. They add their Charisma bonus to sing/perform checks, or advantage, what ever one is not duplicated via class.
  • Troll Fishing >,///;>. Trollings can 'fish' on land or water to catch various prey as noted above. This can either give them advantage or a boost to general survival.
  • Trolling Taunt. As noted above they are exceptional at taunting and intimidating individuals and groups alike. Here they have an advantage as well as an automatic proficiency. Sometimes lawful Trollings will use this to protect their party.
  • Troll Sharing. Never thought a Troll would share? well this is new to me too. They gain bonus's while sitting around sharing stories, food and drink.
  • Troll Weakness. It is said every troll has one weakness. To some its sunlight, to some its a type of mushroom...some is fire. Weather or not the weakness is true, or not, these trolls perceive it as true and react accordingly. It should be as varied as the trolling's themselves.
  • Troll Adaptation. Pick one trait from one other race, like darkvision, or trance...and add that to this race, including the side effects that come with it.
  • Languages. Sylvan and common.

a) doesn't even make sense...really. This cant be the same person responding from earlier that showed such promise. I am not even going to waste time bothering with a response to either of these if we have to keep pointing out the obvious. Its a true waste of our time to explain things to people who cant think out side of the box for themselves. Why were people like this even born? I am voting that if this continues to be increasingly bothersome or difficult we move to another site and remove all of our work here. None of us here like the nit picking. Yeah the majority may vote to move on.

They want to state that it would be different if people said something like, 'hey I don't understand such and such' or 'does such and such mean (etc)' or 'hey our suggestion is this'

I may as well go ahead and go into detail about why some of the traits do not work.
  • "Charisma 50% bonus/penalty 1d4." doesn't make sense. Is that... I add 50% to my Charisma and then subtract 1d4? Or is that slash a divide sign? Why do the bonuses use die rolls at all, when we already have one level of randomization?

a)50% chance of bonus OR penalty. b)to add further diversity in case a group wants to make a party of (Insert race/class). It often happens in our stories. It is possible that our groups are unified more than usual.

  • Regeneration is simply overpowered. You would never need to take a long or short rest to recover hit points, and Hit Dice become meaningless.

a)In our games (Non regenerative characters)you gain 1 hp +con bonus per long rest. 1/2 for short. That is if infection or some other ailment doesn't interrupt the healing process.

b)Most of our games are meant for advanced play. This...Trolling would simply be able to heal himself freeing up the clerics spell slots that is very much needed, since we don't encourage/discourage a party of clerics.

If you apply a little thought, you can find ways to have regeneration in a way that does not disrupt the game.

If this 'disrupts' then it is obvious that the game has bigger problems than a trolling...that is ironically funny.

  • Troll singing. What is a "major action", is that like a regular action? I don't know if "minor pain, damage or discomfort" is just descriptive or if it's supposed to be the actual mechanic. "sing/perform" check I guess is a Charisma (Performance) skill check. What does "what ever one is not duplicated via class." mean? There's no class that provides this benefit.

Ah se we see you have not delved into the various aspects of bards, Original content or supplemental. Major action can me classified as a regular action yet not limited to those actions alone as some regular actions lack specific details of specific situations.

Specific feats or class traits simulate various performance bonuses. This was to eliminate "Stacking".

  • Troll Fishing. So here I figure out that the random ascii headers are supposed to be fish. Maybe? Is this advantage on all Survival checks, even though "fishing" is a subset of survival? What is the "boost"?

Nicely said, we appreciate this. Yes, they can either roll d20 twice and take the greater of the two, or as aloud by what ever Dm, they can gain more proficiency points in survival specifically when 'fishing' for food.

  • Trolling Taunt. Again, more permanent advantages, where advantage is supposed to be a temporary or circumstantial benefit. You don't state what the advantage is on, so I have to guess that it is Charisma (Intimidation) skill checks.

This is correct. A lot of us here fail vs Trolling. Most of us get 'enraged' or 'enflamed'. A few of us remain unbothered. It is a neuro process of varied survival. It is something that cant be overwritten nor should it be medicated. It should be managed via good friend working together. Survival of varied traits leads to varied prosperities in specific situations. The right people for the right job as it were.

  • Troll Sharing. Vague mention of "bonus's" [sic]. Doesn't say what is is, how long they have to sit around for, or anything.

I believe this was left open for interpretation, so if the dm allows the player could add the proficiency bonus again into the Inspiration or skill checks that the bard influences. If the dm allows instead the player can simply take advantage on influencing others with out necessarily having to sing. It is suggested that the trolling would have to sit several rounds at the end of the 'day' the adventures had. And at some point toward the end of the sharing...it ebbs in each of the surrounding persons, like an inner 'ah ha' or 'eureka' sort of inspiration. Nothing too fancy, just one of those moment.

  • Troll Weakness. No actual mechanic here. If this is just role-playing, it goes in the description or in a custom Flaws table.

I agree.

It is a fact that these traits either do not work or are overpowered in the framework of the rules presented 5th edition D&D books.

WE (More than 30 with a combined experience of more than...more than necessary to explain.) disagree. We are also aware of that ALL of our opinions are perception based. This is under the homebrew section and not actual tournament rules right? That was a rhetorical question. Most of us would understand that the majority of contributions that most users post would never be comfortably accepted in tournaments.

We suggest that there should be a section where tournament worthy contributions should go and be listed. These contributions should be locked and un-editable from that perspective/page once submitted. While the Homebrew version remains as editable as the person desires.

THAT would be something noteworthy. And a standardized goal for everyone to achieve at least once.

It played fine until the trolling realized he could not swim, ever...too dam heavy.

It played fine until the trolling realized he was allergic to fish, and anything else that generally came out of the water.

It played fine until the trolling realized the leather armor made him get an itchy rash.

It played fine until the trolling realized the metal weapons made his hands blister.

It played fine until the trolling realized he was afraid of women.

It played fine until the trolling realized she couldn't carry a tune to literally save her life.

It played fine until the trolling realized was too dam cute for any of the intimidations to actually work.

It played fine until the trolling realized the regeneration only worked when he was sleeping.

It played fine until the trolling realized that all this sharing (because he was either too good at sharing or seemingly cursed)often left the party too distracted to be aware of the sneaky little bastards hiding just over there, just out of sight, who waited till everyone was asleep.

It played fine until the trolling realized, they were allergic to other trolls and trollings...

It's great that you can use these in your personal games, but the races and classes on this site should be legible enough that anyone can pick them up and drop them into their own games. Marasmusine (talk) 02:54, 22 April 2016 (MDT)

We have not heard of anyone having issues with this thus far. Of course we are only a few people to the 6+billion people in this over populated world. With ALL that being said, and me running my mouth. I don't feel the need to correct stuff here.

GT II of TierArea (talk) 10:22, 22 April 2016 (MDT)

So, just going back to regeneration. In anormal D&D game, in a short rest you can spend hit dice to recover hit points. In a short rest, you get all your hit points back and half your hit dice.
Explain/Confirm or give me a page reference number for this so I can read it for myself. THIS doesn't make sense to me because it seems like it could lend to either a exploitive loop OR have diminishing results.
In your game in a long rest you get 1 + Constitution hit points back, and in a short rest you get half of that (so presumably Hit Dice do nothing in your game?)
Hit dice is a measurement of what dice you use for your hit points. Size matters in my game. Professions may add or subtract from overall hit points. It is not uncommon for a 'first level' to only have a single digit hp range. However in my game, I also have realistic feats and such that augment these some. I do the best I can to keep it real. My game is realistic and tough. I do not currently have a level cap on players.

I technically don't have 'levels' either, technically, however I use those 'level' terms as a point of easy reference.

IE Bobby Leon Fisher wants to emulate his father and play a chef and cook for the party. So lets think about this logically. What is one of the first things you must learn before you even can think about cooking? Its survival, in being able to know what to eat and not to eat. Well what do you need to understand what you can or cant eat or find what you need? Perception/Awareness. That must supersede your survival 'level'.In 5thed equivalency the skill needed would fall under investigation/perception and then survival. Bobby decides to name his chef Doko. So doko can find food, so now what next? Doko must know how to forage, track, hunt, run, climb, swim etc. All these are needed and are separate in variations of my game depending on what the general players want from my game, as its very versatile. I prefer the hardcore super detailed version as it makes my brain think. Once all the basics is understood, Leon quickly realizes that starting out as a level 1 anything is difficult as his intelligence only allows him a certain amount of skills, and he can not invest into the majority at all. So he opts for some easier choices. Buying the basic premade packs from local chefs he starts by making broths and soups, easy enough. He gains proficiency with each success. He also learns how to use a knife in the process, and for general understanding, its almost like he is a rouge, for his own survival. He gains a few 'levels' and now he has spent skill points to have minor proficiency in skills, so he can at least stop buying ration packs and making soups...he finds a oriental pot that doubles as a hat and a shield...he is enthused, and now takes up shield use. Gaining more proficiency he learns that he could opt to duel wield iron pots or knives in battle. He is becoming a force to be reckoned with. In the down times he also gains proficiency (experience) when he cooks...and now he is learning that certain herbs can increase the healing rate or boost vigor and energy levels. He is quite a BA chef now. Mildly decent in combat and now his soups and broths almost double as a healing potion, except with a few minor slow effects like, mood elevation and energy boost because it has vitamin B. All these things I have aloud because he checked out books on cooking, foraging and such from his real life local library, and educated himself. His character gained proficiencies as he did. His real life father could not have been more proud of his son when on a family reunion he offered to help cook, and impressed others with his knowledge of herbs, spices, alternatives, and knowledge about each food effects the body and when you should eat certain things when your not feeling good. He now has real life rewards that can never be replaced or stolen.

That makes regeneration even more powerful in your game, since it might take a non-trolling several days to completely recover (rather than 8 hours), whilst the trolling is back to maximum hit points within minutes.
Yes indeed, and often the only thing keeping the party alive while they recover and are stalked by their pursuers. However in my game, this also makes him a target, since they know to take him out first. So it ends up, until they are healed that he is hanging on by the skin of his teeth at times. Too bad no one in the party knows anything about cooking or herbalism. The cleric can only do so much. Welcome to reality. Now the players learn to tackle obstacles smarter, appreciate each others abilities, cover each other, work together etc.

Its pretty dam cool to watch the sense of accomplishment swell with in them as the conversations of their new found skills apply in real life. That my friend, will make you sleep with a smile on your face.

By comparison, the best regeneration available in a vanilla game is the fighter's survivor trait (which they don't get until 18th level, and only up to half maximum hit points).
Checking that out. ALOT has changed in 5the some better and some worse. I don't know everything. I am half tempted to ask how much you guys would charge me to have my own category for my game. LOL. I just cant find educated dms to run it. Its been difficult to say the least.

Confirmed the fighter thing. It reminds me of a FPS console game ability. I am starting to think the 5thed is similar to my vanilla version of my game, where its really basic...We haven't played that basic in so long its not funny. We all have our own iconic characters. New players get stuck goofing off in the testing zone and are satisfied there...not many as of late have reached the actual game. The ones that have...well. They will have stories to tell their friends and maybe even their kids if I am that fortunate to be that important. It wouldn't be the first time. Aint that something...I feel like I am truly accomplishing something. Hehe.

Regarding the stacking on singing, you still haven't clarified if you mean the Charisma (Performance) skill or not. By the way, advantage doesn't stack with another advantage anyway. Marasmusine (talk) 13:14, 22 April 2016 (MDT)
I am glad, however I noted it because some dms have been allowing things to stack ridiculously. Even to the detriment of other players, as to control them via charm...pissed me off. Charisma modifier + proficiency bonus. And if they have perform as a proficient skill, then it would be charisma modifier + Proficiency bonus + performance skill. I think this is already stated somewhere, in bard via a skill as is the 'advantage' part however I don't remember everything.

Alternative traits[edit]

Here's a very rough idea of some traits that might work for everybody just using the rules in PHB (rather than "advanced" "tournament" play). Happily I already had some regeneration rules from a Troll race/class I was working on.

  • +2 Constitution
  • Medium size

I do like the idea of various size trolls, as based in lore. I didn't feel like making a hundred sub races. LOL

  • 30 ft. speed
  • Regeneration Points. You draw on a pool of regeneration points to regain hit points at the start of your turn. When you first make your character, and at the end of each long rest, you can spend any number of your Hit Dice. For each Hit Dice spent, roll the die and add your Constitution modifier to it. You gain regeneration points equal to the total.
  • Regeneration. If you are below your maximum number of hit points, at the start of your turns you must spend regeneration points equal to your character level. You regain an equal number of lost hit points. Excess regeneration points are retained. You lose unused regeneration points when you generate a new pool at the end of a long rest.

This is tolerable. And since it upgrades with level, I like it.

  • If you take acid or fire damage, you cannot regenerate in this way at the start of your next turn.

This I DONT like. 1)There is no realistic lore based on this. 2) it excludes the variety of trolls and troll weakness's based on the various lore

  • Troll Singing At the start of your turn you can begin singing. You must concentrate on your singing as though you were concentrating on a spell. While you are singing, you have some benefit that I haven't decided on yet.

I actually laughed out loud when I read that abruptly. My brain when 'wait what?' as if it was being narrated by 3 people who just suddenly said three different things. LOL

You can sing for 1 minute, then you must finish a long rest before you can sing again.

  • Troll Fishing You can spend 10 minutes fashioning a troll fishing line from any materials to hand. The line is 60 feet long and can be trailed along land or water. If you see a tiny beast move onto the line, you can use your reaction to snare it. The beast makes a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, it is snared. You can subsequently use your action to reel it in, pulling it 15 feet towards you; or you can move 15 feet further away, dragging it with you. On its turn, the creature can attempt to escape as though escaping from a grapple.
  • Trolling Taunt. You can incite the calmest of individuals to a state of rage. When you make a Charisma (Intimidation) check to taunt a creature, that creature has disadvantage on any contesting check to keep calm.
  • Troll Sharing. When you spend a short rest sharing your drink with at least one other creature you can communicate with, at the end of the rest each participant gains temporary hit points equal to the number of participants (up to 10). This consumes one waterskin's worth of water or liquor.

Again, this i like. I couldn't figure out what would be good except what I had read. THIS I like as its fitting of some nearly forgotten lore.

  • Troll weakness I've left as the lore-friendly acid/fire weakness above.

Again, like I said, I didn't like this aspect for the reasons noted. As well, as ...I hesitate...when i was younger I could heal from all sorts of wounds and rather quickly...even 2nd degree burns and lacerations with out scaring. However since...certain trauma and tragedy, I seem to have lost that ability and now everything seems to be ...worse than normal. my healing as a kid was one of the reasons i was picked on and called a witch, dude being a witch...really? LOL

  • Troll adaption I've left as 1) I don't like the idea of taking another race's unique feature, and 2) They already have enough traits without potentially taking another major trait. Marasmusine (talk) 15:04, 22 April 2016 (MDT)

It was all I could think of to make them more individualized trolls, based on various lore. Not all trolling's should be the same...Since not all come from the same kind of trolls. my best guess and answer.

I picked fire/acid because that's how to stop trolls regenerating in D&D lore, but similar alternatives would be fine. At one extreme, having them turn to stone in sunlight might make them rather difficult to play! Marasmusine (talk) 00:23, 23 April 2016 (MDT)
Indeed and, as far as I am concerned, it would be kinda fun, if played well. I mean think about it. You could have the Trolling Olympics. These type of trolling's having a skating marathon through the metropolis, and as they skate across the street they turn to stone and keep rolling and as soon as they hit shadow they are back at it. LOL Or he could sit in the back of the wagon during the day in some pose like holding the adventures gear that they use at night...who knows it could be cool...if used well.

Would spf 300 keep them from turning to stone? LOL

Its looks like our guest wants to stay with us a little longer. I didn't know we were that well liked. LOL.
