Talk:Mummy (3.5e Template)
From D&D Wiki
[edit] The story is...
I needed a mummy NPC for a game I'm planning. Except the current mummy rules were a little overzealous. So I whipped up a template to be acquired when it wouldn't be gamebreaking at later levels (hence, you must be this tall--er, character level 5 to become a Mummy). That said, I'm dubious about Mummy Rot. On the one hand, it's powerful. On the other hand, enemies are going to be killed anyway. Usually. I may do a basic version, and then have a feat to improve it.
In writing this, I drew some inspiration from the old horror classic of a mummy lurching around throttling people. Hence, they're good at grappling. And, if you notice, they get some of the benefits of Powerful Build without actually getting the ability to use really big weapons.
The template, and the classes you can take with it, are geared towards warrior-types and divine casters. I needed it to hold up in melee, so that's why they get their Charisma to their hit points. Real undead generally have several HD more than their CR to keep their hitpoints appropriate, which throws all kinds of things out of whack. Handing out HD to player characters like handing out candy to a kindergarten class on Friday Treat isn't good, so I had to come up with something and someone suggested Unholy Toughness. It's also thematically appropriate, with the image of a Mummy holding himself together partly from force of personality.--Genowhirl 12:42, 18 March 2009 (MDT)
