Talk:Guardian (5e Subclass)

Threw this together because there's a lack of defense oriented options in 5e. I realize giving extra AC is huge in 5e but when holding the shield with two hands you cut your speed and offense (1d4 instead of the 1d8 from a shortsword or the like.) in half, and you only gain +2AC. (And up to an additional +5 at 18th level, which is balanced for that level.)

The defensive stance is basically a dodge action, but you gain resistance to physical damage as well. This would be the same as a barbarian taking a dodge action (ending his rage of course) but without the rest of the rage bonuses.

In short I believe this archetype is balanced. I haven't field tested it a whole lot yet, so if anyone has comments or concerns please speak your mind. I'd love to hear any and all input.--DreadPirateJaceMangrove (talk) 22:15, 24 August 2015 (MDT)

I like this homebrew but for 2 things. There is an action called "Dodge" which makes all attack rolls are done as a disadvantages and give you advantages oh dex saves. Your all-out defense does the disadvantages and give resistance to weapon damage. I don't see much point of this since you are essentially leaving your self open to magic attacks. My other problem is the last ability refers to "Iron wall" ability. but no such ability is mention before hand. -From TJGF

Thanks for the input! When creating the defensive stance ability, I wanted to create a better "Dodge" action that focused on defending against attacks instead of dodging them.
However I completely forgot you get advantage on dex saves when dodging. (Whoops!) I changed it so they can use strength saves against magic to keep the shield up. (With advantage of course!)
Plus they ability gets much stronger at 10th and 18th level.
As for the "Iron Wall" ability, that was referring to what I had named the defensive stance ability originally. I changed it to be more in line with the naming conventions of other fighter abilities.
(AKA really bland and descriptive. But I still quite like the name Iron Wall. It was a tough decision to make. :P) Nonetheless, the typo has been fixed.--DreadPirateJaceMangrove (talk) 01:26, 29 August 2015 (MDT)

QUESTION:is the +4bonus ac on top of the AC you get from a shield? If so WHY that high of a bonus.-ELM
