Talk:D&D Wiki Magazine/Issue 2

Just one question, why are we making a an issue about magic weapons while we have a full magic issue? Azernath (talk) 20:28, 29 April 2015 (MDT)

1)Magic weapons don't quite fit with the "metamagic" theme I was going for in issue 1; 2) We have enough magic weapons and related articles in the wiki to fill up a whole issue. Think of it as a supplemental issue.Marasmusine (talk) 01:29, 30 April 2015 (MDT)
But could we not make a generalized "weapons" issue that happens to include magic weapons? This would open things up a bit beyond just a gigantic inventory list. --Kydo (talk) 15:08, 16 June 2015 (MDT)
I'd like to do an issue devoted to nonmagical arms and armor (and the classes that use them). I remain open to the possibility if I can't find enough material (the 4e magic weapons here aren't as interesting as I had hoped) Marasmusine (talk) 03:31, 17 June 2015 (MDT)

Wow, I thought there'd be a better selection of 4e weapons, what we have on the wiki isn't great. What we include in this issue needs to be better than boring "does more damage" effects! Marasmusine (talk) 07:57, 30 June 2015 (MDT)

Captain's Sword[edit]

I'm going to finish up the Captain's Sword for 5e so we can include that in the magazine. It's a perfect fit! OwenLeaf (talk) 15:28, 29 June 2015 (MDT)

Artifacts and Sentience Items[edit]

Should we add Artifacts with the magical weapons? Because if so I have a great idea for one, Green Serpent (5e Equipment). Azernath (talk) 18:12, 31 July 2015 (MDT)

And if you want to I can also make a Sentience weapon for the occasion. Azernath (talk) 23:55, 31 July 2015 (MDT)

All I can say is make them and then we'll see. I'm not sure about associating Green Serpent with monks, if this is Guan Yu's guando. He really would've been a fighter (or warlord) Marasmusine (talk) 15:49, 1 August 2015 (MDT)

The reason I said monk, is because Guan Yu is born in an easten land so he is well tought with the ways of the monks. Azernath (talk) 17:55, 1 August 2015 (MDT)

5e Creatures[edit]

If anyone gets the chance can they look over Flying Dagger Swarm (5e Creature) and Caryatid Column (5e Creature). Someone should check the editor's own creations before they go in.... Marasmusine (talk) 15:49, 1 August 2015 (MDT)

I might have good ideas for them, but can we add golems as weapons? Azernath (talk) 17:55, 1 August 2015 (MDT)
As long as they have an interesting link with magic weapons, e.g. the (tenuous) magical weapon link with the caryatid column is that they can ruin a player's magic weapons if they're not careful. Marasmusine (talk) 01:06, 2 August 2015 (MDT)
What if the creature is used as a weapon of the gods? Azernath (talk) 02:49, 2 August 2015 (MDT)
I... uh... not sure? Might be stretching the definition but let's see. Marasmusine (talk) 01:36, 3 August 2015 (MDT)

Progress[edit]

Here's how it's looking so far: Homebrew Issue 2. Note that I haven't worked on spacing yet, once all the content for a section is done I go in and space it out with illustrations. Marasmusine (talk) 02:07, 3 August 2015 (MDT)

It looks awesome. I am a huge fan of this product. I look forward to each issue with greater anticipation than Dragon+! --Kydo (talk) 03:04, 3 August 2015 (MDT)

3.5e Magic Item costs[edit]

It's been a long time since I've made 3.5e magic items, can someone verify that I'm calculating the price right. For Binding Dart (3.5e Equipment) I've got 5 sp (dart) + 300 gp (masterwork) + 2000 gp (+1 enhancement); then for the spell effect (7 (CL) × 4 (spell level) × 1,800 (use activated)) / 5 (once per day) = 10,080 gp

Total = 12,380 gp 5sp ? Marasmusine (talk) 14:23, 4 August 2015 (MDT)

Variant Rules[edit]

Are variant rules valid submissions to the magazine? --Kydo (talk) 17:02, 9 August 2015 (MDT)

As long as its to do with magic weapons. Marasmusine (talk) 12:51, 10 August 2015 (MDT)
Would Enchanting_(5e_Variant_Rule) be too broad if I complete it in time? (Which, let's be honest, I'm terrible at) --Kydo (talk) 19:05, 10 August 2015 (MDT)
We'll, I'm a little confused, since it starts by saying that 5e banned magic item creation, and yet there's a section on magic item creation in the DMG. Marasmusine (talk) 01:00, 11 August 2015 (MDT)
Not that I saw. It explained how to make magic items for a DM, not an in-game process for PCS. --Kydo (talk) 09:34, 11 August 2015 (MDT)
Isn't it the "crafting a magic item" downtime activity? The character needs a) a formula, b) to be a spellcaster with spell slots, c) to known any spells that the item can reproduce, d) to have a minimum character level appropriate for the rarity of the item, e) special materials as determined by the DM. The character then makes progress each day spending 25 gp until the value of the item is met. Marasmusine (talk) 09:59, 11 August 2015 (MDT)
Well fuck. I hate this book. It has half a page of useful hidden between hundreds of pages of useless blather. And now I have egg on my face. Well, they didn't quite approach the subject the way I would have, obviously. Hm. --Kydo (talk) 10:22, 11 August 2015 (MDT)
If you think there's some good variants then there's that. Marasmusine (talk) 10:30, 11 August 2015 (MDT)
Well my version follows the tradition of costing xp instead of gp, treats enchanting as a practice independent of any other form of spellcasting, and has two modes of making magic items; one cheap but impermanent, the other expensive but permanent. --Kydo (talk) 10:36, 11 August 2015 (MDT)

Update[edit]

I'm aiming for publication for the 1st week of September. There's still quite a bit to do. Thankyou to everyone who has helped so far.

  • I've added some 3.5e magic items and spells (see the candidate list), they look OK to me, but again if Ixidor or anyone else 3.5e literate can check them over that would be appreciated
  • I need one more 3.5e spell and one or two more magic weapons/weapon enhancements.
  • At least two more 5e spells, I will check the existing content again but I'm also happy to create some content.
  • Another 5e monster, I will look at Azernath's submissions, but ideally I'd like something that isn't another construct.
  • More mundane trinkets, think storytelling rather than magical effects.
  • All I have for 4e is four magic weapons. I'm not entirely happy with my Conjurer school so I think that will miss the deadline.
  • I need to write a forward.
  • An editorial or essay from anyone would be nice. Marasmusine (talk) 03:07, 22 August 2015 (MDT)

Is it good if I add an Azer who wield a forge and can create magical weapons like hell and control them from a far. They are elementals. Azernath (talk) 23:44, 22 August 2015 (MDT)

That sounds crazy, all I can say is that you should give it a go and I'll take a look :) Marasmusine (talk) 01:48, 23 August 2015 (MDT)

Here's the current edit. I've added a few images. A significant addition is Maglad's legacy item, Deathless. I think there's enough information for people to use this without needing Weapons of Legacy. Marasmusine (talk) 08:26, 23 August 2015 (MDT)

Just noticed that I've already gone past issue 1's page count... Marasmusine (talk) 08:30, 23 August 2015 (MDT)

As I mention on the page, I think I'm finished, http://1drv.ms/1ESszaq - let me know if you see any last minute edits I should make. Marasmusine (talk) 10:26, 11 September 2015 (MDT)

Contributors[edit]

I don't think that it is okay to list the "authors" at the end. I have given tremendous work onto some of the pages, for example the Illusionary Weapons Master (3.5e Prestige Class) (dif) but there is nothing listed. At least a link to the history and something accurate would be okay. Or some acknowledgement for all the hard work that people like me put into some of these pages. --Green Dragon (talk) 00:56, 17 September 2015 (MDT)

Featured Article Review[edit]

Like the others, this page does not meet FA standards. --Kydo (talk) 07:31, 11 September 2016 (MDT)

  • Support — For the stated reason above. --Kydo (talk) 11:37, 18 September 2016 (MDT)
  • Oppose — I think that being an FA brings attention to the hard work in the magazine, and since each article is reviewed as part of the magazine process the entire publication merits the FA status. I also feel that it is a good way to bring FA attention to smaller pages like equipment items, etc through their themes. For me, the compilation of the magazine together with a theme goes beyond the states required for FA comprehensive pages (minimum three paragraphs, and mechanics, etc). --Green Dragon (talk) 06:51, 2 October 2016 (MDT)
  • Comment — OK, that's fair, the publication is good, but the page is a freaking mess. It's the textual equivalent of a workshop floor immediately after a big project was completed. If we want these to be featured articles and still set a good example, I think a lot of cleanup would need to be done. As it is, the display page is like an organized form of the discussions on the talk page; an extension of the talk page, rather than being the other way around. Actual discussion on the display page would probably need to be moved to the talk page. A detailed blurb about the magazine's production and contents would need to be written. Perhaps even a publication infobox with an image of the cover? Also, if this page is being featured on the merits of the pages used in the publication, why can't those individual pages stand to be featured on their own merits instead? Does it make sense to do both? --Kydo (talk) 07:26, 2 October 2016 (MDT)
I fear that you are right about these actual pages. Great catch! The individual pages mostly still do not have links, and a "consensus" has not been reached for each of the pages so I fear that they should not just be given the FA mantel– being part of the magazine. I don't know if a good workaround would solve these concerns. --Green Dragon (talk) 15:38, 2 October 2016 (MDT)
What if we did up the project page for the magazine as a whole to be of FA quality, and featured it instead? Then we could maybe consider featuring an individual issue page much later in the project, if we start producing clear, well-organized and informative pages for them. Or what if we added the magazine to our publications project, and made separate articles detailing their contents, separated from the individual project page mess? --Kydo (talk) 18:14, 2 October 2016 (MDT)
