Talk:Aspirant (5e Background)

I know what you're getting at with the class feature, it still needs rewording, as "situation" is vague and you can spam the rolls. You should be strict as to the kind of situation it can apply to (when you meet a new NPC or travel to a new location), otherwise limit this to once per day. The name for this background is misleading. "Idol" in D&D almost immediately brings up imagery of golden statues of fell deities. The name sounds like you'll be some sort of mad cultist. The name of a background, on this site, is basically your only marketing tool, and having a misleading name could cause your intended audience to bypass the page completely, while simultaneously attracting some other unintended audience. This can be bad because, if your page title is misleading, the unintended audience has the full capacity to "correct" the page to suit what they think it should be. Consider these more apt names:

  • Disciple: a follower or student of a teacher, leader, philosopher, or other role-model. (This one is the definition of your concept, and the most appropriate.)
  • Aspirant: (of a person) having ambitions to achieve something, typically to follow a particular career.
  • Emulator: To strive to equal or excel, especially through imitation
  • Imitator: a person who copies the behavior or actions of another.

If you decide to heed my advice, you can change a page's name by using the "move page" function. --Kydo (talk) 05:29, 11 September 2016 (MDT)

I can see where you're coming from and really appreciate the list you made. Disciple still gave me some religious vibes so I changed the name to "Aspirant". I felt it really described the class as someone being inspired by a legend. Thanks for the help!

Tool proficiencies and languages are functionally interchangeable for balance in a background. I believe the downtime activity proficiencies are intended to be equivalent as well. In total, this background provides 3 non-skill proficiencies, which exceeds the typical 2 from the DMG and PHB recommendations. --Kydo (talk) 23:14, 15 December 2016 (MST)

Done! That's my mistake. I was under the impression that having a downtime proficiency just replaced one of your skill proficiencies (hence why there was only one before). The extra language has been removed and an additional skill proficiency has been added.

Cool. I'm really glad this reached a finished state. This is a classic character style, and having a background to represent it seems like great fun. --Kydo (talk) 22:49, 22 December 2016 (MST)
Glad to see someone out there is enjoying it!
