Talk:Aarakocra (5e Race Variant)

From D&D Wiki

The way Flight is worded makes the race's flying ability into a magical effect (since it directly references jump and featherfall), is this correct?

I am a also moving this to the Racial Variants section, since it is a racial variant. Marasmusine (talk) 09:13, 4 February 2016 (MST)

I was thinking this was a replacement, but perhaps variant (as i've seen it most commonly used as a sub of the race) is appropriate.

To your question, no. The wings allow the character to slow their fall, hence featherfall, or to boost their leaping power - hence jump - and I wanted to preserve some action economy and not create new rules for the implementation of such, so the existing spells were used as patterns. The effects generated are mechanical, not magical in nature.

I've edited the original and it now reads (use the spell effects as a pattern - target is obviously limited to yourself only - the effects generated are non-magical in nature)

I love this race variant omfg, i am running a campaign of 5e atm and i let one of my players play an aarakocra to my mistake and it has been making it really hard to do skill challenges, chases or some combats. This variant will make it so much easier on me i will definitely make her switch to this one for balancing purposes. Thanks :D --Vladmere.Labefactum (talk) 22:25, 7 April 2016 (MDT)

I agree this is a vastly more reasonable version of the race. Well done. --73.185.215.172 08:18, 8 April 2016 (MDT)

I disagree and think this is stupid. Just an opinion. The nerfed aarakocra, when travelling overland with the rest of the party, would need to ride on horseback with the rest of the group if they have horses. Otherwise, he can't keep up... despite being a bird-man from the Elemental plane of air- a realm of precious little land. That's stupid. Also, why can't they hold anything in their hands when flying exactly? It doesn't seem to be justified by anything at all. And, finally, why would a bird-person be so freaking bad at flying?? --Kydo (talk) 06:09, 1 September 2016 (MDT)

That said, this is a variant race, and I will defend the original intent behind its design. Please do not edit this race to be identical of the official race. --Kydo (talk) 00:38, 7 September 2016 (MDT)

"you must make Wisdom save versus DC 5 each hour or become Frightened.". How long for? Until the next saving throw? (Assuming the PC is not able to move away from the area) Marasmusine (talk) 16:25, 19 October 2016 (MDT)
