Spinning Blade[edit]

Expert with throwing glaives, Spinning Blade is a formidable opponent in any type of combat. Weakening his foes from distance with his arcane carved glaives and then rushing into melee combat, they tear through enemy lines like knife through butter. Even thou they lack vast expertise of common fighters, a couple tricks of their own compensate for this quiet fairly. Some Spinning Blades rely on mobility and cunning, while others hurl glaives with monstrous strength, slicing everything into pieces.

Making a Spinning Blade[edit]

Spinning Blades can be extremely useful when paired with precise but not very powerful classes, as well as tough and slow ones. If properly trained he can provide certain degree of defense to magic users, while hitting hard distant foes. However, he is comparatively less able to stand her ground, lacking both the heavy armor of the fighter and the evasive maneuvers of the rogue. Spinning Blade should avoid head-on charge until his enemies are weakened to a state when he can come and quickly dispatch one after another with a couple of precise swings in melee.

Abilities: Although not very tough, Spinning blade relies heavily on his physical attributes. Dexterity is needed for defensive purposes, but more importantly for bonus feats preq. Strength is obviously needed to damage with range and melee attack. Constitution is recommended, for it will provide greater survivability as well as additional uses of special abilities. Intelligence is useful to increase weakening ability.

Races: Any race can be a Spinning Blade, if it's allowed to have Int score.

Alignment: Any, but non-chaotic tend to be more appropriate.

Starting Gold: As Fighter.

Starting Age: Moderate.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Spinning Blade.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Spinning Blade is proficient with all simple weapons, plus one martial weapon and exotic weapon (Throwing Glaive). Spinning Blade is proficient with light armor but not with shields.

Glaive Return (Ex): Spinning Blade excel at throwing glaives and know how to throw it to recieve it back in any desired location. Throwing glaives always return to your position at the end of the turn.

Infused Glaive (Su): Using minor arcane carvings during creation of glaives, Spinning Blade can dramatically reduce combat effectiveness of it's foes. Attack with Glaive deal additional 1d4+Int modifier damage to Dex, Con or Wis at your choice. Usable once per round. Spinning Blade Level/2 (round up) times per day.

Whirlwind Style: At this level of expertise Spinning Blade adopts his special style of fighting with two glaives. Now, he can make another attack with second glaive during full attack action as if he had Two-Weapon Fighting feat (-4/-4). At 6th level penalties reduced by 2, and at 10th they reduced to zero.

Wall of Steel (Ex): Spinning Blade is named after it's potent technique. By spinning glaives at lighting speed he can create almost impenetrable shield of whirling steel. Each Glaive you wield grants +2 deflection bonus to AC, if this glaive used to make an attack you lose it's bonus until next turn. You lose this bonus if flat-footed.

Ricochet (Ex): By calculating most effective path, Spinning Blade can hit multiple opponents with one glaive throw. After confirming critical hit with thrown Glaive, you may make another attack at the same attack bonus to target within 30ft radius from previous target. Can ricochet N times in a row.

Charging Throw (Ex): Timing and speed are the most potent weapons of Spinning Blade. By using them both in conjuction he can make ranged throw as part of charge action before movement and recieve his glaive right back before making melee attack. Usable Int modifier times per day.

Cutting Throw (Ex): By gathering all his strength, Spinning Blade can throw his glaive with such speed that it will cut through almost anything in a blink. As full round action you may throw one glaive in 30ft line and inflict critical damage to every target within. If this ability deals damage, targets caught in the area can attempt Reflex saves to take half damage (DC 10+Spinning Blade Level+ Str modifier). Can be used Con modifier times per day, after it you are fatigued. This critical damage can’t trigger any critical-dependent abilities.

Improved Wall of Steel (Ex): Increasing rotation speed Spinning Blade can create even more effective barrier of blades. As a result of training, he can start glaive rotation almost instantly. You retain deflection bonus even when flat-footed, and when you not bonus increases to +3 for each glaive.

Infused Glaive (Su):Improved and more accurate arcane carvings grant Spinning Blade even more power to disable his enemies. Now, you deal 1d8 + Int modifier bonus attribute damage.

Carving Throw (Ex): After years of training Spinning Blade learn how to throw it's glaives to such degree, that it can fly as if was flying on its own. You can create a custom path for your glaive to fly for up to 60ft, but it must end at your position or fall to the ground at last square of it's trajectory. If this ability deals damage, targets caught in the area can attempt Reflex saves to take half damage (DC 10+Spinning Blade Level+Str modifier). Can be used Con modifier times per day, after it you are fatigued. This critical damage can’t trigger any critical-dependent abilities. Replaces Cutting Throw.

Unlocked Potential: At 15th level Spinning Blade surges with realization that his glaive controlling skills have it's roots in low sorcery, thus allowing deeper understanding of magic, if he chooses to receive casting training. Your effective caster level now +1/3 of your Spinning Blade level.

Lighting Glaive (Ex): Apotheosis of Spinning Blades ability to control glaives grant them ability to hurl it so fast and accurate that it returns within a second after being thrown. Your glaives return to you immediately after attack.

Unlocked Potential: After 20th level each level grants +1 caster level instead if 1/3.

Greater Wall of Steel: Deflection bonus increases to +4 per glaive.

Grand Infused Glaive: Attribute damage becomes 2d6+Int Modifier, each level after 25 grants additional use of Infused Glaive.

Grand Wall of Steel: Deflection bonus increases to +6 per glaive.


Bonus Feats: The epic Spinning Blade gains a bonus feat every 3 levels after 20th.

Epic Spinning Blade Bonus Feat List: Distant Shot, Distant Shot, Distant Shot, Epic Fortitude, Epic Prowess, Epic Reflexes, Epic Speed, Great Constitution, Great Dexterity, Great Intelligence, Great Strength, Overwhelming Critical, Devastating Critical, Perfect Two-Weapon Fighting, Storm of Throws.

Playing a Spinning Blade[edit]

Religion: Spinning Blades come from all walks of life and can worship any deity, or none at all. However, there is a tendency towards deities of war, such as Kord, Erythnul, and Heironeous.

Other Classes: Spinning Blades tend to gather with caster type parties in order to quench their curiosity and seldom the are rejected. Rangers and mercenaries welcome Blades as well for their exceptional skills. However, Blades find it difficult to work with raging ones such as barbarian. They feel pity to those who can win only through maddened charges and who can't appreciate elegance of their ways.

Combat: Spinning Blade is a martial damage-dealing class, like the fighter and barbarian. Unlike the fighter and barbarian, however, they rely on ranged attack and weakening tactics rather than direct confrontation. With only light armor, no shield, and only a medium hit die, they can't take as much punishment as other martial classes. They must compensate for this using their skills and opportunist tactics. Rather than meeting their enemy face-to-face, they shower their foes with whirling steel and charge only to deliver finishing blow to those already on a verge of death.

Advancement: Spinning Blades technique is somewhat complex so they tend to avoid multiclass, but when the don't they pick classes with similar fighting style. Rangers training can give a potent edge to lone Spinning Blade, as well as Warmage class, effectively allowing some useful arcane spells to work with. Stealth classes can give access to potent abilities that'll improve survivability on the battlefield as well as give formidable damage improvement.

Characters with ranks in Knowledge(Acrane) can research Spinning Blades to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.
