The Ronin is an experienced warrior whose training transcends the simple hack 'n slash regiments of most fighters. They are experts at inertia, guiding their foes to their doom with their powerful, controlling tactics. They are bound to a code of honor that deviation from means eternal dishonor. They take out most foes with moves that make their opponents wonder when the Ronin even drew his sword, and dazzle them with excelsior swordplay. This comes with the minor price of them not being amazingly proficient in most other weapons, however they are still very capable of translating their sword skills over to certain weapons, like daggers, clubs and short staffs.
Ronin Overview |
| Characteristics: Ronin are calm, subtle fighters that draw their sword when it is necessary. They do not waste time waving around their blade like some status symbol, and ultimately it is why they are so intimidating. At any moment that blade could be drawn and with it, a pint of the enemy's blood. Ronin once served in their military as fighters but left their lifestyle behind to redeem themselves as artful, intense masters. |
| Religion: Ronin are less concerned about fighting as they are about the art within violence. Thus they are less inclined to worship warmongering gods, however they could find themselves appeased by worshiping Kord. Corellon and Ioun are much preferred due to their emphasis on human nature, the arts, knowledge and beauty. |
| Races: Very few classes can play the Ronin as well as a human can, but Elves, half-Elves and Eladrin make a good effort, half-Elves taking the helm as the second best race to do so due to their human bloodlines. |
[edit] Creating a Ronin
The two builds of the Ronin, Bushido and Iaido, circulate around the actual styles of their combat. They aren't so much separate as they are specialists in certain styles. An Iaido Ronin could easily translate his abilities to the Bushido style, and vice versa. The Iaido Ronin specializes in knowing his opponent's move before he makes them, and from there exploiting his weaknesses, trapping him in a web of steel death. The Bushido Ronin is much more straightforward, devastating his foe utterly. All Ronin trade off their ability to wear heavy armor for intense agility, that in many cases makes up for the fact that they do not like to burden themselves down with armor that hinders them.
[edit] Iaido
The Iaido style is very humble in its fighting style. An Iaido specialist waits to draw his sword, merely utilizing harsh striking or even grappling attacks with his own body. Once his enemy makes a mistake, or the specialist deems it a worthy time to strike, he will draw his sword. It uses a large amount of battlefield awareness, due to the overall patience of the style. Dexterity should be the primary ability score to make the Ronin agile, as well as help him with most attack powers. A second runner up is Wisdom for battlefield awareness and some of the useful powers of the Ronin style. Strength is good to have to increase melee attack power, as well as if you would like to dip into the other style.

[edit] Bushido
Bushido Ronin are closer to the ideas of a battlefield fighter. They enjoy the thrill of a good fight, and have their sword drawn usually from the very start of the encounter. This class works well to supplement the already intense skills of the Iaido Ronin, which is more what the class idealizes. However, it is worthy of being its own build. Bushido Ronin focus on dealing heavy, quick strikes with their blades, not spending as much time as a Defender in the fray of battle of course. Dexterity should still be the primary ability score, as it helps with agility and most attack powers. Strength is good as a secondary ability score, as it helps the main attack powers of the Iaido class, as well as basic attacks. Wisdom is always helpful for battlefield awareness and double-dipping.

[edit] Ronin Class Features
All Ronin share these class features.
- Agile Armor
Ronin are extremely agile as they have trained themselves to not need shields, and with their extensive training they have disestablished a real need for armor as well, as they are more focused on dealing immense damage on the battle field. That is why they add their Dexterity modifier to their AC.
- Blade Efficiency
Ronin are extremely potent with their techniques. However they are not merely hacking away at one enemy, but setting up others who come their way. When they drop an enemy, the remaining damage cleaves into any adjacent enemy, whether it is an enemy adjacent to the fallen foe, or adjacent to the Ronin himself. This is a choice as well, as the Ronin could simply stop his blade once it is through the enemy, and finish his attack without adding the extra damage to the nearby enemy.
- Iaido Draw
Unlike other classes who can select the feat: "Quick Draw", Ronin specialize in a more powerful form of it, gaining an improved initiative for +4 to initiative, as well as the ability to draw their blade in an instant. Ronins never need to make a check to draw their weapon and are capable of delivering any of their weapon-based attacks, including powers, even when their sword has not yet been drawn.
- Perceptive Dash
Due to their agility and perceptiveness, Ronins are capable of a powerful ability known as the Perceptive Dash, or Eibin Toshiin, explained below.
[edit] Ronin Powers
Ronin are master swordsmen and have trained themselves to have absolutely no gaps in defense or offense. They used to have masters, but soon found that to commit their lives completely to the way of the blade meant that they had to become self-taught, honing their bodies in a way that only they could. Ronin may seem like simple swordsmen, but just as well, they are capable of delivering destructive amounts of damage with their fists, feet and even fingertips. Their powers are listed here.
