More information...

A Tyrant of Colossal Proportions, its hide covered in grievous battle scars, has appeared before you. Its body trembles with rage and hunger as you fall under its bloodshot gaze. It is covered in countless red scales, and a webbed membrane has formed between its flimsy fingers. A cloud of steam jets from its mouth with each ragged breath, and it howls in fury as it lunges toward you at a terrifying speed…

The eldest and most violent of its kind, The Pylraster is an Earth Tyrant which has lived for more than 1000 years. The legend of the species’ origin is proven true, as the colossal reptile’s body undergoes a shocking mutation in its old age, taking on increasingly draconian characteristics (thick red scales, vestigial wings replacing the arms, harmless steam breath, horns, etc.) Consumed with self-loathing and hatred for its misshapen form and distant ancestors, The Pylraster will viciously attack any creature on sight. There is only one Pylraster at a time, as the beast will seek out and kill any potential rivals before they can reach millennial age.

The Pylraster is often spoken of by parents, telling tales to frighten their children. Its reputation is well deserved, for The Pylraster has, on at least one occasion, taken on a Wyrm Black Dragon—and emerged victorious.

The Pylraster weighs approximately 20 tons and is 100 feet long. The beast is an insanely fast runner. Its head is typically 15 feet long, and its teeth can measure anywhere from 1-2 feet. At the twilight of its life, The Pylraster is said to be 125 feet long and strong enough to smash golems with its head.

Combat[edit]

The Pylraster will pursue and attack whatever arouses its ire. Its tactics are relatively simple—charge in and bite. It will swat away any opponents with its tail if attacked from behind, and will Rampage if flanked.

Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability, The Pylraster must hit an opponent of up to one size smaller with its bite attack. It can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. If it wins the grapple check, it establishes a hold and can try to swallow the foe the following round.

Swallow Whole (Ex): The Pylraster can try to swallow a grabbed opponent of up to two sizes smaller by making a successful grapple check. The swallowed creature takes 2d8+8 points of bludgeoning damage and 8 points of acid damage per round from the tyrant’s gizzard. A swallowed creature can cut its way out by using a light slashing or piercing weapon to deal 25 points of damage to the gizzard (AC 14). Once the creature exits, muscular action closes the hole; another swallowed opponent must cut its own way out.

The Pylraster’s gizzard can hold 2 Huge, 4 Large, 8 Medium, 25 Small, 90 Tiny, or 280 Diminutive or smaller opponents.

Screwtail (Ex): Although seemingly magical in nature, this impressive attack owes its origin to the Tyrant’s evolutionary process. The Pylraster can whip its tail forward at such a great speed that air becomes trapped within the grooves and, upon reaching the end of the arc, is released like a missile, dealing 5d8 points of bludgeoning damage (8d8 if you were standing right next to it) in a cone with a radius of 40ft. any living thing struck by this attack must make a Fortitude save (DC 25) to avoid being sent flying and stunned for 2d4 minutes. The Pylraster can use this attack once every five turns, where it acts as a full round action.

In addition to the basic Earth Tyrant attributes, the Pylraster possesses the following qualities:

Rampage (Ex): if The Pylraster is flanked, it will thrash and flail in an extremely violent manner, dealing 6d8 points of bludgeoning damage to anything within 10ft of it, sending anything struck flying for about thirty feet—just enough to keep The Pylraster out of the typical opposition’s range, but not enough to keep them out of its reach. A Reflex save (DC 25) is required to reduce the damage by ½.

Berserk (Ex): if the Pylraster is reduced to 25 HD or less, it enters a mindless, enraged state where it gains the following qualities:

  • damage reduction 20/magic
  • resistance to fire 15
  • immunity to electricity, acid, cold, and any mind-altering effects
  • +5 deflection modifier to Armour Class (AC 25, touch 13, flatfooted 19)
  • all of its attacks deal an extra 15 points of damage that is not subject to damage reduction

Frightful Presence: The Pylraster can inspire terror by charging or snarling. Affected creatures must make a DC 48 Will save or become shaken, remaining in that condition for 5d6 rounds. This affects anything within 50ft of The Pylraster. The saving throw is Charisma-based.
