Phoenix-Born (3.5e Class)

Scales.png This page is of questionable balance. Reason: Only 10 levels. Was this supposed to be a prestige class? Features are badly designed. There doesn't seem to be a limit for Power Flare, and there's no benefit to not having it on, so what's the point in being able to turn it off and on? Many features say "for 1 round" but that doesn't really explain how often they can be used. As written, I could keep using Palm of Healing "for 1 round" indefinitely. Pico Pico does not make sense: I can't make a swift action at the same time as taking an attack action. Body of Flame needs to pay attention to how similar effects elsewhere in 3.5e are worded.

A millennium ago, the first Phoenix-Born were created. As the Phoenix neared the end of it's cycle a large cabal of wizards created a magical trap around it's nesting grounds. When the Phoenix incinerated itself, it's powers were transferred into the unborn child of a modified human. After a thousands years of breeding, the powers of new generations have been diluted, though with perseverance and training, their ancestral powers can be unlocked.

Class Features[edit]

Through much training, Phoenix-Born can access more and more of their ancestral powers. All of the following are class features of the Phoenix-Born.

Power Flare: Swift action, Hair and eyes change color to gold, ancestral tattoos appear on body. Enables use of other class features while active. (Power Flare on)

Cool Off: Free action, Hair and eyes return to normal colors, ancestral tattoos fade from body. Cannot use Phoenix-Born class features when Power Flare is off. (Power Flare off)

Flaming Fist: When unarmed and in light armor (or less), you may charge your fists with fire with a swift action. For one round your unarmed attacks deal 1d6/2 class levels extra fire damage. (Requires Power Flare)

Palm of Healing: When unarmed and in light armor (or less), you may convert your fire to healing fire. For one round you may heal people by making unarmed attacks against them (You convert the fire for the entire round, you can't flip flop damage and healing). They are healed for any fire damage you (would) do and any physical damage damage you (would) do is reduced to zero (unless you want to damage them). This healing is reduced by fire resistance. (Requires Power Flare)

Pico Pico: When unarmed and in light armor (or less), a Phoenix-Born may swiftly throw attacks. Using a Swift action, for 1 round when making an attack action the Phoenix-Born may make an extra attack at their highest attack bonus. (Requires Power Flare)

Fist Projection: When unarmed and in light armor (or less), Your unarmed attacks can be used as a ranged attack out to 30'. This attack deals only the fire damage of Flaming Fist. (Requires Power Flare)

Hand of Resurrection: By using your ancestral powers, you can bring a person back to life, as long as you have the body. By flaring your power to high levels, you can raise a person who has been dead less than a week. This is a 10 minute ritual, and they are returned at full health. After this you lose your Phoenix-Born Class Abilities for a number of hours equal to their ECL. You can regain your powers alternatively by resting for a number of hours equal to a quarter of their ECL. (Requires Power Flare)

Rebirth: 20 days after you die, your body immolates, turning into a pile of ashes. At a point of your choice in the future, you appear in the womb of a family of your race struggling to have a child (As a fetus). Upon birth you retain all memories of your previous lives. (Does not require Power Flare)

Body of Flame: When you flare your power, your body becomes more like the body of your Phoenix ancestor. Once per round as a Immediate action, you may negate 1 physical attack against yourself, it passes harmlessly through your body (and armor and other gear, don't question it, it's supernatural). (Requires Power Flare)

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Phoenix-Borns are proficient with all simple weapons, plus the longsword, rapier, short sword, and the short bow. They are proficient with light armor.

Playing a Phoenix-Born[edit]

Religion: Phoenix-Borns tend to follow religions dealing with fire or rebirth instinctivly.

Other Classes: Phoenix-Borns don't strictly react to any specific class in the same manner, their interactions are based mostly on personality.

Combat: Typically Phoenix-Borns stand on the front lines dealing damage, and they can drop back and do some healing as necessary.

Advancement: Many Phoenix-Borns dip into other classes for more specialized fighting techniques, especially after they get the ability to attack at range.

Phoenix-Borns in the World[edit]

"You distract 'em, I'll fire up and put 'em down."
—Rocnar, Dwarf Phoenix-Born

Phoenix-Born can easily fit into normal society, usually as mercenaries or combat types. As long as they don't flare up, they are safe from pursuit. Once they are discovered, they may be tracked and captured by the Cabal of the Phoenix, who are trying to resurrect the phoenix by capturing the essences stored in all Phoenix-Borns.

Daily Life: A typical day of a Phoenix-Born is spent training in hand to hand combat, or practice with any of the weapons they are proficient with. They like to relax around fires at the end of the night.

Notables: Pho, the Notorious shadow hunter of Ban'Tear.

Organizations: Phoenix-Born groups tend to be small and mostly anonymous to avoid the watchful eye of the

NPC Reactions: If it is unknown that they have supernatural powers (aka they never use Power Flare) they are usually treated as militant types, once their powers are discovered by others, sometimes fear of being associated with them, other times a desire to protect, and if they are of the Cabal of the Phoenix, then usually over friendliness, while they wait for backup to properly steal the powers within.

Phoenix-Born Lore[edit]

Characters with ranks in Knowledge (History) can research Phoenix-Borns to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.

Knowledge (History)
DC Result
5 When Phoenix-Borns Flare their Power, their eyes and hair change to gold, and golden tattoos appear on their bodies.
10 To use almost any of their supernatural abilities, a Phoenix-Born must flare their power.
15 Phoenix-Born healing is a sort of healing fire, it burns away infections, and cauterizes and cleans wounds, people who are resistant to fire are resistant to this healing.
20 Phoenix-Borns can reincarnate upon death, and the most powerful of them aren't affected by some physical attacks.
