These shields are primarily used as portable cover for crossbowmen and archers, usually using either a ground spike or a fold-out stand.
As an action, you may plant the pavise onto the ground. While the pavise is planted, it can provide half cover to one person, but forfeits the normal +2 bonus to AC from wielding this shield.
