Osborn Highhill is a halfling hermit, living in a broken and overgrown shack far from civilization. He's a cheerful and warm host, who happily lets weary travelers rest at his broken home for a night or two. His clothes are tattered and dirty, with splotches of dried blood up his sleeves and across his shirt. His eyes appear to be the same color as whoever observes them and his fingers are longer than normal for his kind.

Beneath Osborn's home is a sprawling burrow, large enough for the average orc to easily maneuver through. Hundreds of thousands of rats scurry about this warren, though they do not attack unless attacked first. Osborn is proud of his colony, often boasting that they are the healthiest and well tended rats in all the land. The halfling rat master is not interested in the gold or odd stones his partners dig up, and will willingly trade them for any homeless rats that are brought to him.

Due to an unfortunate misunderstanding, whereby his control of the rodents was attributed to some evil nature or magic, Osborn was forcefully subjected to a ritual that would make him easily identifiable magically. His soul and body was tainted by the essence of a succubus so various spells could detect his location from a considerable distance before he could approach settlements. The kind-hearted halfling, as a result, detects as both Good and Evil to appropriate spells. As an unexpected side effect of the ritual, he may summon to his aid a Dire Rat, just as a Succubus summons demons for help.

The blood across his shirts is actually animal blood. Often he will take a small group of hunting rats with him to gather food to feed the colony. This food is usually Deer or Horses(depending on the region he occupies in a campaign), though he's not above leading an attack against bandits or goblins that are causing strife to the local area.

DM NOTES[edit]

Osborn Highhill is a standard Lightfoot Halfling with a homebrew Tiefling template applied unwillingly.

Variant rats, produced by Osborn for tunneling, battle, stealth or even as mounts, will be linked to once they are on the wiki. Each will have advice for if the players would like to enlist the assistance of Osborn in their use. Dire Shadowrat's are available as mounts from Osborn, if he considers the PC's close enough friends.

Osborn Highhill is also an interesting way to reward players for unique battle tactics. Subduing and transporting rats to Osborn should earn the players a random item(or set of items) dug up by the halfling with a value at the minimum of a treasure 1 CR higher than the rats CR(to reflect subduing, transporting, and keeping alive rather than simply slaughtering)
