Inath (DnD Variant Rule)
From D&D Wiki
Inath is about Immortality. It is about becoming a god/dess, or at least harnessing powers and secrets unknown to most mortals.
Let's get one thing straight here: THIS IS NOT A NORMAL, TYPICAL D&D SYSTEM. It is based loosely around the concepts laid out in Deities and Demigods, but the applicability has been tweaked so that advancing from n/a to 0 to 1 Divine Ranks is now more like character progression, and less like Divine Miracle.
[edit] What is Inath?
If you have ever read Deities and Demigods or viewed the Divine Rank portion of the SRD/OGL Content, this will all seem pretty familiar to you in terms of stats, while the concept, progression, and character applicability may not.
Information is continuously being moved from http://www.elftown.com/_Inath to this page, and tables, stats and rules will be written and balanced here.
Characters and creatures who progress through the tiers of Inath capacity (known as Inath Caste and Inath Level) are sufficiently more difficult to deal with than a typical character or creature of their sort, and this information is MOST helpful for a GM hoping to add a flavorful Divine/Deific context to their character's progression, or to make an NPC just that much more untouchable (for those of you who have player characters who can do practically anything they want).
There is a certain culture and feel/mood to having an Inath campaign, and it can get pretty gruesome when you have player-vs-player activities, or if you are a player dealing with an Inath entity without a smidgen of knowledge about what makes them so bad-ass.
[edit] Inath Assumptions and the Jashnian Cosmology
The Inath Variant Rule system assumes a couple of given facts about the spiritual qualities of both typical humanoid races of the D&D game and deities themselves. In the Jashnian Cosmological scheme, it is assumed that:
- Mortal characters can ascend to godhood through training, self sacrifice, and obscure or occult methods. This system is referred to as the Cabala Inata, or simply, “Inath.” The term originates from a dialectic word used in the Ganye Plainslands of the continent of Eastonia, and the word is said to have some influence or origin by the Titanic language and script. Titans have been known to openly practice methods of divinity and ascension throughout the recent millennia. Most covet their secrets with the utmost of caution and various levels of intrigue and deception, to keep other mortals from following in their footsteps and potentially becoming opposition to the Titans themselves.
- Divine Rank can be achieved at lower HD and Class levels than Deities and Demigods describes, and that lower HD creatures with enough intelligence for introspection and wisdom for perspective can attain some level of divinity, even if only in the form of an eternal continuation of their own inner, personal spiritual energy. The Inath Caste of Ghimhara can be attained with a minimum of 7 HD and the right amount of skill points in Knowledge Skills like Arcana, the Planes, and Religion. No class, race or creature is best suited to such methods of Ascension, but certain Affinities come naturally to certain magical bloodlines such as Dragons, Sylvans (Fey), Titans, certain Magical Beasts, Aberrations, and others. Affinities that come through magical bloodlines are often the result of oaths and pacts made to divine powers made be ancestors of that creature.
- There is an unlimited amount of potential for Divine Rank, and the Spark of Divinity resides within most – if not all – living creatures.
- A character can actively seek their own immortality and divine status, and that they can learn ancient ways which will help them to do so from teachers, referred to as Mentors.
- Divine Rank is a more flexible and variable system than outlined in Deities and Demigods, and somewhat like Class Progression.
- Quasi-deities (Legends, Heroes, Kings, etc.) and various divine powers have existed for longer than commonly known, often in the form of secret societies and sects, and that religious dogma and doctrine is not always at the center of such a cabal.
- Deities, even those of like or lesser Divine Rank, can challenge the whims of another deity with equal or more Divine Rank in a careful and complex challenge known as an Inath Battle (Ego vs. Spirit, Ego vs. Ego, or – rarely – Spirit vs. Spirit), and that success against another deity is not merely decided by Divine Rank alone.
- Deities can take extra divine Inath Class Skills such as Knowledge (Inath), Craft (Planar/Spiritual), and Telekinesis to add a further challenge to the typical d20 attack-oriented system.
- Divine Power, through the gateway of the Divine Spark, is bound to the body (the ‘carnal temple’ or the ‘host’) through the use of powerful substances, energies and/or objects known as Affinities, and these Affinities affect both a deity’s portfolio and their use of divine willpower when affecting environmental qualities of particular sorts.
- Even the gods and goddesses must go on spiritual quests to rise to greater heights. Legendary Quests and Spiritual Journeys are common among divine culture.
- Mana is a force of the divine that is inherent in all living and some non-living creatures and objects, and can be utilized with particular feats, talents, and Inath abilities. Mana can be used in place of and to enhance spells, spell-like abilities and other capabilities, creating an intricate system of challenging a deity to do what it wishes to do in order to affect the world, the realms of existence, and the potential worshippers giving their allegiance and patronage.
- Divine Ascension is possible, fun, challenging, and rewarding to players who would like to try something new in their game worlds.
[edit] Inath Stats and Information
Let's talk about what makes an Inath Character, and what kinds of new terms and applicability will be used here:
- Jashnian/Inath/Deific Ability rolling method - see the Jashnian Rolling Method (DnD Variant Rule)
- Inath Progression / Inath Caste / Inath Level:
- Progression is a form of Divine Ascension that lasts between True Mortality (No Divine Rank) and Immortality (Divine Rank of 0-20 or more). There are some terms we will use here:
- Inath Caste - These six Castes separate mortals and immortals into a tiered, caste-oriented system. Characters will find that other characters in their own Caste are more balanced in terms of opponents, and that trying to attack a character or creature that is in a higher Caste is SUBSTANTIALLY more difficult. The Castes are split into these groups:
- ABYSMA - Without Divine Spark potential (cursed)
- NADAATH - No Divine Rank (Mortal)
- GHIMHARA - 3 levels of the first tier. By the third level, an Immortal Soul and a title of Legend, Hero Deity, or Legendary Hero (Divine Rank 0) is achieved.
- IMBURITH - 3 levels of the second tier. By the third level, an Immortal Body is achieved, as well as powerful new capacities.
- QIL-RURI - 3 levels of the third tier. Achieving this Caste provides an inherent Divine Rank of 1 (Demigod), as well as powerful new capacities.
- DA-ATHMA - The final Inath Caste, which progresses from Divine Rank of 2, all the way into the position of Overdeity (Divine Rank 21+).
- Inath Level - Each tier of Divine Rank n/a to 1 is split into three levels. These are somewhat like character class levels, but they are definitely more powerful, and require a higher amount of Experience Points, Spiritual Journeys, and Legendary Quests to achieve.
- There also some important new terms and uses to consider:
- Divine Spark Energies:
- Void (Shadow)
- Veil (Ethers)
- Umbra (Astral Umbra)
- Permea (Permeatic Umbra, "The Gauntlet (Plane)")
- Inath Talents (Prerequisites for Salient Divine Abilities and Domain use in further progression)
- Inath Cabals, Cults and Clans
- Mana Points and Arcane Mana Conversion
- New Craft Skills:
- Characters without Knowledge - Inath can substitute a Knowledge - Arcana or Religion rolls, but they take a -4 to -10 penalty, depending on the information they wish to glean from such a check.
