Help talk:Glossary of Jargon

It is not alphanumeric yet. I was just brain-storming, dumping everything I could think of onto the page. This has a long, long, long road ahead of it. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Kydo (talkcontribs) . Please sign your posts.

I'll add anything more I can think of. With this great range of stuff I can't believe you left out the obvious S-word! --SgtLion (talk) 01:27, 18 October 2016 (MDT)

There is now a reference template which simplifies linking people to headers on this page. For example, say I wanted you to learn Dice Notation. That's a lot simpler than dice notation. --Kydo (talk) 15:17, 18 October 2016 (MDT)

Wow. I never realized how extensive our lingo really was until I started trying to archive it all... There's a lot of terms and phrases that are unique to specific communities or tables, which I'm not keen on adding. There's also a LOT of derogatory, rude, crude, crass, and overall insulting language in our hobby. Perhaps, if we want to know where the juvinility of our community comes from, the language we teach them to use may be partially to blame. --Kydo (talk) 17:42, 15 November 2016 (MST)

I'm wondering if it would be helpful to split this into two: official (game) terminology, and community slang. Marasmusine (talk) 12:50, 19 December 2016 (MST)

I might agree. Something needs to be done. The page just keeps getting longer. I know for a fact we haven't covered all the major playstyle communities. I wonder though, where do you draw the line on terminology and slang? thac0 was slang before it was standardized. RPG theories aren't mentioned by any core books, but they also aren't slang. Dice notation was invented by hobbyists long ago, but is used by game designers in finished products. The line is not always so clean cut. I like the idea of giving them each their own page. Then a preload could be used to standardize entry content... but some of these are very shallow, and there isn't much more to say. --Kydo (talk) 14:28, 19 December 2016 (MST)
By terminology, I was thinking of things specifically defined by the core roles: ECL, XP (but not EXP), save, SRD, THAC0 etc. But then, if someone doesn't know what THAC0 is, how would they know which list to look in. Marasmusine (talk) 03:44, 20 December 2016 (MST)
We could make the entries into separate pages and use semantics to create a sortable table, maybe? --Kydo (talk) 05:15, 20 December 2016 (MST)

DMPC? Yeah, that's what Rorix the White is (he is also constructed so that the PCs will eventually turn on him and try to kill him for his (many, many) crimes). But he is a full-fledged character, he has 20 pages written about him, as well as a notebook detailing his spells, exotic magical knowledge, and research. I have probably put 100+ hours into him. Eventually I will put him on site as a 3.5e NPC. Rorix the White (talk) 16:30, 28 November 2018 (MST)

It might be nice to have an entry on "Frank & K", as this page mentions them a few times but newer users (such as myself) will likely not know who they are. I had to do a google search to figure out who they are and it wasn't even that helpful. TeslaFistforge (talk) 22:02, 19 September 2020 (MDT)
