Golems and artificers

I saw in one of the D&D magizeens a beholder head were people could ride
around in it and zap things with the eyebalss. I was woundering, 

shouldent artificers be aloud to custemize metal at robotic looking constructs and golems that are of a big enough size for them to ride

around in and contol,like a mechwarroir or or something? they are 

artificers and they do do lots of things with constructs.
