Faithful Sword[edit]

Faithful Swords are born with the innate ability to use divine magic, similar to Favored Souls. A Faithful Sword's connection to divine magic comes from a deity choosing her to be a physical representation of an idea or belief without knowing which deity chose her. This makes it so they do not worship a specific deity. Some Faithful Sword's will focus more on their physical prowess, as others will concentrate on becoming the best spellcaster they can be.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Faithful Sword.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Faithful Swords are proficient with all swords, with light and medium armor, and with shields (except tower shields).

Spells: A Faithful Sword casts divine spells (the same type of spells available to clerics), which are drawn from the Cleric spell list.

To cast a spell, a Faithful Sword must have a Charisma score of 10 + the spell's level (Cha 10 for 0-level spells, Cha 11 for 1st-level spells, and so forth). The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against a Faithful Sword's spell is 10 + the spell's level + the Faithful Sword's Charisma modifier. Like other spellcasters, a Faithful Sword can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. Her base daily spell allotment is given on the table above. In addition, she receives bonus spells for a high Charisma.

Unlike a cleric, a Faithful Sword's selection of spells is limited. A Faithful Sword begins play knowing four 0-level spells and three 1st-level spells of your choice. At each new Faithful Sword level, she gains one or more new spells, as indicated on the table below. (Unlike spells per day, her Charisma score does not affect the number of spells a Faithful Sword knows; the numbers on the table below are fixed.

Upon reaching 4th level, and at every even-numbered Faithful Sword level after that (6th, 8th, and so on), a Faithful Sword can choose to learn a new spell in place of one she already knows. In effect, the Faithful Sword "loses" the old spell in exchange for the new one. The new spell's level must be the same as that of the spell being exchanged, and it must be at least two levels lower than the highest-level favored soul spell the Faithful Sword can cast. A Faithful Sword may swap only a single spell at any given level, and must choose whether or not to swap the spell at the same time that she gains new spells known for the level.

Chaotic, Evil, Good, and Lawful Spells: A Faithful Sword can’t cast spells of an alignment opposed to her own. Spells associated with particular alignments are indicated by the chaos, evil, good, and law descriptors in their spell descriptions.

Spells per day: Unlike a cleric, a Faithful Sword need not prepare her spells in advance. She can cast any spell She knows at any time, assuming she has not yet used up her spells per day for that spell level. She does not have to decide ahead of time which spells she’ll cast.

Deity: A Faithful Sword, much like the opposite of a Favored Soul, cannot worship a deity and instead must worship an idea or belief such as truth or fairness.

Returning Swords: A Faithful Sword can make a ranged attack with her swords at a -2 penalty. Damage dealt by this attack subtracts any damage added by a high strength score. She can do this from 50ft away at 1st level, 100ft at 8th, and at 15th level, she can ignore the -2 penalty. Swords thrown by a Faithful Sword cannot be intercepted by any physical means when they are returning to her.

Fast Pace: At 1st level, and again at 11th level, a Faithful Sword adds 5ft to her base movement speed as long as she is wearing light or medium armor.

Bonus Feat: At 3rd level, and at every 6 levels after, a Faithful Sword gains one feat from the general feat list. At 12th level, a Faithful Sword may instead choose a feat from the fighter bonus feat list.

Energy Resistance: At 5th level, and at every 5 levels after, a Faithful Sword chooses an energy type and gains resistance 10 against that type. She cannot choose the same energy type twice.

Damage Reduction: At 10th level and again at 20th level, a Faithful Sword gets damage reduction to all physical attacks.

Bonus Languages: A Faithful Sword’s bonus language options include Celestial, Abyssal, and Infernal (the languages of good, chaotic evil, and lawful evil outsiders, respectively). These choices are in addition to the bonus languages available to the character because of her race.

Ex-Faithful Swords[edit]

A Faithful Sword who goes against her alignment or what she worships loses all Faithful Sword abilities and spells. She may not progress any farther in levels as a Faithful Sword. She regains her abilities and advancement potential if she atones for her violations by acting as her alignment dictates and/or following her ideals again.

Playing a Faithful Sword[edit]

Religion: Faithful Swords do not worship in the conventional sense, instead of worshiping any one deity they instead represent an ideology, whether this be truth, honor, or even chaos.

Other Classes: Faithful Swords can get along with anyone that aligns with their ideal. Faithful Swords that have chosen an ideal such as truth would not get along with rogues, and vice versa.

Combat: Faithful Swords are a good fill to any spot on the battlefield. Their armor and weapon proficiency allows them to have many play styles, whether it be the front-line combatant, a sneaky thief, or a spell-flinging powerhouse.
