Dragonbond Knight[edit]

She is not my steed, she is my companion.

Fantasy worlds are filled with people who ride around on all kinds of stuff, but none is more immediately iconic than that of the Dragon Rider. Every fantasy world has warriors who ride around on dragons. Even ones that don't fit into D&D methodology in any other way. At some level it resonates.

Class Features[edit]

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: The Dragon Rider gains no proficiency with armor or weapons.

Dragonbonded Mount: A Dragonbond Knight is only half of himself without his dragon companion. At first level, the Dragonbond Knight is granted a dragon that serves as his companion and ally. The Dragonbond Knight may choose any type of dragon he wishes, but the dragon's hit dice cannot exceed the Dragonbond Knight's character level minus 2, or the Dragonbond Knight's class level plus 10. Once a bond is formed between the two creatures, their binding is final; a Dragonbond Knight may not receive another dragon. Although a dragon is bonded to the Dragonbond Knight, it still has the same needs and desires as others of its race, including its love of gold and wealth. As such, half of a Dragonbond Knight's share of gold must be given to the dragon for its hoard.

Draconic Mutation: The bond between the Dragonbond Knight and his dragon causes a mutation in the dragon's physiology. A Dragonbond Knight's dragon is one size category larger than a typical dragon of that age. (Note that by default, gargantuan dragons have clumsy maneuverability.)

Dragon Skills: Whatever a Dragon Rider does with her life, the special skills of her Dragon Mount's race are class skills for her, and she gains a +3 bonus on them (Balance and Climb for White, Hide and Swim for Black, Bluff and Listen for Blue, Survival and Diplomacy for Green, Sense Motive and Appraise for Red, etc.).

Accelerated Growth: Being tied to a Dragonbond Knight causes changes in a dragon's maturation. Whenever a Dragonbond Knight is a high enough level to accept a dragon of an age category higher than his current dragon, his companion immediately grows to that age, in both body and mind.

Dragon Resistances (Ex): A Dragon Rider is naturally resilient to whatever it is that her dragon breathes. She gains Energy Resistance equal to her Base Attack Bonus to that energy type.

Dragonriding: A Dragonbond Knight may add his class level as a bonus to any Ride checks made in conjunction with riding a dragon. Also, any dragon ridden by a Dragonbond Knight enjoys maneuverability of one grade better than normal (but no better than average maneuverability).

Flyby Attack (Ex): Any dragon mount ridden by a Dragonbond Knight is treated as having the Flyby Attack feat, even if it doesn't already have it. If it does, it gains another feat that it could take at that level.

Dragon Fighting (Ex): A 5th level Dragonbond Knight knows the tricks of fighting with and against Dragons. Any attack he makes against a Dragon inflicts an extra 2d6 of damage.

Dragon Senses (Ex): A 6th level Dragon Rider has Blindsight out to 30', as well as Darkvision out to 60' and Low-light Vision.

Immunity to Fear (Ex): By training with such ferocious creatures, Dragonbond Knights have developed a superior sense of bravery, and are immune to all types of Fear.

Dragon Immunity (Ex): At 7th level, a Dragonbond Knight gains immunity to whatever energy type his Dragon Mount breathes. Also, he has immunity to Sleep, Paralysis and Aging; the immunities granted by being a Dragon.

Bahamut's Will/Tiamat's Will (Su): At 8th level, a Dragonbond Knight gains a bonus equal to his Charisma bonus (if any) on all saving throws, but only if they worship either Bahamut or Tiamat. This means freelance Dragonbond Knights do not get this class ability. This ability does not stack with Divine Grace.

Dragon Empathy (Su): The Dragonbond Knight can speak telepathically to any Dragonkind creature within 60 ft. The Dragonkind will understand whatever the Dragonbond Knight says to it. The Dragonbond Knight has a +5 to all checks involving Dragonkind. The range increases to 120 ft at level 5, and 240 ft at level 10.

Synchronicity (Ex): At 10th level, a Dragonbond Knight has become one with his mount, and is no longer made to take Ride checks outside of combat. In combat, the Dragonbond Knight gets an additional +10 competency bonus to Ride checks on his dragon, and may take a standard action to grant his dragon an extra move action that turn.

---Ex-Dragonbond Knights---

If a Dragonbond Knight makes a huge decision that his Dragon objects to (ex. the decision is incompatible with the Dragonbond Knight's or mounts alignment), offends his mount majorly, or decides to stop revering Dragonkind, the mount will leave the Dragonbond Knight. At that time, the Dragonbond Knight loses all Dragonbond Knight Class features, and must contact the Dragon to apologize. If the Dragon accepts the apology, it will re-join with the Dragonbond Knight, and they will regain all pre-existing Dragonbond Knight Class features.

Note: A Dragonbond Knight that has a mount, but is not riding it does not lose their Dragonbond Knight class features.

If a Dragonbond Knight's mount dies, the Dragonbond Knight immediately takes 1d4 damage for each hit dice the dragon possessed. the Dragonbond Knight may spend 24 hours in a ritual to revive the Dragon. The Dragon will be fully revived in its original body, which means a part of the body is required for the ritual. The Dragonbond Knight must also relinquish some of his own blood onto the Dragon in order to revive it. The Dragonbond Knight's CON is reduced by 1 permanently.
