We need a smaller version of Campaign Setting[edit]

Even if you don't include all the stubs I'm currently tagging for deletion, a lot of shit posted under DnD Campaign Settings is not really a complete campaign setting. Part of this is because creating a campaign setting is hard and most people suck at writing, but another part is that a lot of custom stuff that gets created for that category really doesn't fall under the aegis of "campaign setting" at all. Instead it's just an individual country, or individual plane. There should be a place on the wiki for ideas like "individual country" or "individual plane", but that place is not "campaign setting" which has very, very specific connotations.

I just realized 3.5e Environments exists. That's actually a good place for a lot of stuff. That page needs to be separated into 3.5e and 4e though, there are different environmental rules in each.

I have a few comments to add. First, not all people use a complete campaign setting; some people only use a single plane or a single continent in their entire campaign, because there can abe a lot going on in such a small place. Having a small campaign setting like that doesn't mean it isn't rife with detail. I'm just saying, we dont need to disriminate against the little guys. Sure, some of them should go under 3.5e Environments, but they should have the chance to show the expansiveness of their playing space.

With that in mind, perhaps we shoyld post a general description or definition of what qualifies as a campaign setting as opposed to an environment (or similar).

Second, I have a page made specifically for making a campaign setting easier to create. It sets up all the pages for you with a general guideline and includes the broadest amount of information I could muster. It can be found here (Create New Campaign Setting), and the alternative layout can be found here. I have already suggested in the discussion for the Campaing settings page that these be added.

Last, and possibly leats importantly, bad typing, writing, and spelling can be fixed by those of with better skills with them, especially if the Author of a campaign setting is available and willing to collaborate in its improvement through language.

A few comments, Val.

Firstly, a campaign setting needs to answer the question "what happens outside this country's borders". If it doesn't, it should go under Environments and not Campaign Settings. I think this is part of "perhaps we should post a general description or definition of what qualifies as a campaign setting as opposed to an environment" though. I'm not saying that all single continents shouldn't go under Campaign Settings, but most of the time they'd be way better under Environments.

Cool to hear about the page making campaign settings easier to create!

Finally, when I say bad writing, I don't mean bad spelling and grammar. I mean the fact that most ideas are just bad to begin with and what comes out of the brain-hand interaction is trash that is unusable by anyone. It's harsh, but I think we all understand that to be true and we've all done it anyway. I know I've made my share of unusable trash over the years.
