Bladed-Mage[edit]

Mages of the world vary from individual to individual, from the huddled old wizard locked deep in his lair to the youthful initiate seeking adventure. One thing all mages have in common though is they are useless with a blade, having never trained in the finer arts of fighting. This is the void the Bladed Mage fills. They train with blade and magic, learning how to enhance their blade wielding prowess with the powers arcane. Whilst never truly comprehending the deepest secrets of magic, during the course of their learning they teach themselves to enchant and create magical weapons and to enhance their blades on the fly. Part of their training involves learning to not only maintain, but to create their own weapons. This leads to many Bladed-mages becoming fairly skilled at weaponcrafting and blacksmithing. The secret being that each bladed mages weapon is unique to them. Whilst some choose to create fine pieces of art in blade form, others create unimaginative items purely for killing. Each blade reflects their owner in many ways. Whilst iron or steel is the most common material used some more adventurous Bladed-Mages have crafted their weapons out of some truly unique materials. One bladed mage who also dabbled in necromancy created his honed blade out of hardened bone, magically protected to not loose its edge. Another who was also a talented Psion crafted a blade out of his crystalline companion. His companion wasn't too pleased with this but they still grew to become a formidable force.

Making a Bladed-Mage[edit]

Bladed Mages are magic users with a focus on using magic to enhance their combat abilities. They lack basic defensive ability however due to the inability to cast in armor. They fit well into a group needing a little extra magical support or a little extra damage.

Abilities: Intelligence is their most important skill, being used for their spells and only defensive ability. Strength is also important for extra damage and accuracy in melee combat. Constitution is helpful due to their naturally low hitpoints.

Races: Humans are the most common of bladed mage due to their adaptivity, but elves are common, with their knowledge of ancient magic. Other races very rarely become Bladed mages as they lack the will to train in both the blade and magic becoming expert in both but never a master.

Alignment: Bladed mages can, and usually do, choose to follow any alignment they fancy. Much like mages they tend slightly towards lawfulness due to following structure and stricture in their training but chaotic bladed mages are still not an uncommon sight.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Bladed Mage.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: All Bladed mages are proficient with all swords and sword-like weapons (Short swords, Long swords, Bastard swords, Two-Handed swords, etc.) and are also proficient with all normal mage weapons. If the DM is very kind they can also be proficient with light armor (but are still subject to normal spell failure)

Spells: Bladed Mages choose their Bladed Magic spells from the following list:

0— light, detect magic

1st— Protection from alightment, True Strike, Magic Weapon, Reduce Person, cause fear

2nd—Mage Armor, Protection from arrows, resist energy, web, blur, mirror image, any of the list of “bulls strength, cats grace” etc.

3rd— magic circle against alignment, Displacement, haste, keen edge, magic weapon (greater), slow

4th— stoneskin, dimension door, confusion, crushing despair, bestow curse, ennervation, polymorph (must turn into something able to comfortably grasp your honed blade, cannot use any natural weapons in the attack role following the cast)

5th— dismissal, Teleport, feeblemind, hold monster, mind fog, baleful polymorph

6th— antimagic field, dispel magic (greater), true seeing, circle of death, (Mass bears endurance etc.), hardening, move earth?, transformation

Honed Blade: The Bladed mage creates their first blade at level 1 and slowly improves upon it as they grow. The blade has a minimum cost of 100gp and MUST be rolled for the creation of at char creation. Should the player fail the role and destroy the sword they must spend the next part of the adventure trying to craft a new one (or using a potentially broken blade). This one blade is the only blade they may use their special Bladed casting ability with. This blade is known as their “Honed” blade. The Honed blade needn't necessarily be a sword, it could for instance be a scythe, but the mage doesn't start with the proficiency to use any weapons other than swords. Should it be destroyed for any reason they become an ex-bladed mage and may not advance until they have created a new sword (paying full XP and gold costs).

Improve Honed blade: During the course of their training the Bladed Mage must magically Improve their own blade. Every 4 levels starting from level 4 the bladed mage is allowed to enchant his sword at no experience cost. He must still pay the gold costs in full, and if he has naught the gold he cannot advance. The enhancement rules follow the standard creating magical arms and armor rules. He may perform these upgrades without the necessary feat (magical arms and armor)

Bladed Casting: A bladed mage learns several spells he can cast as free actions, but only whilst making a standard or full attack action. They must be chosen from the list below. All touch attack based spells are at -5 to hit due to being an off hand attack. The spell is always cast BEFORE the attack and does allow for attacks of opportunity. Should thespell fail due to failure on a concentration role, each attack isat an additional -5 to hit and -1 dmg

Intelligent Parrying: This gives a bonus to AC based on the players INT bonus modifier. Can only be used when the player is holding nothing in their off hand. Just 'cos it needs a drawback. (this includes 2 handed honed blades, using it in both hands stops this effect working)

Creators note: is this too powerful? this could potentially give a level 1 BM an AC of 18 before buffs. either keep it, remove it or have it replace the Dex AC bonus (depending if dex or int is higher). if replace then possibley remove the free hand drawback.
