Black Paladin[edit]

The dark mage watched as the holy warrior charged towards him. Surely he had gone mad, with his own blade broken, he was now wielding an unholy blade from the cleric's armory. The evil cleric stood his ground waiting for the sword to smite his foe, finding it convenient that he wouldn't have to raise a finger to finish his foe. But the holy warrior did not turn to dust, the dark mage was run through on the blade he worked so hard to obtain, a look of utter confusion on his face.

The Black Paladin is a holy warrior dedicated to rooting out evil and destroying it, often using its own powers against it. Fortified by righteousness, they use profane magics and great tools of evil against the darkness, all while retaining an untainted soul.

Class Features[edit]

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Black paladins are proficient with all simple and martial weapons, with all types of armor (heavy, medium, and light), and with shields (except tower shields).

Emulate Evil (Su): When they need to, black paladins can emulate evil alignments very well to use the enemy's tools against them. The DC for an emulating and alignment that is evil, but still lawfully/chaotically the same as the black paladin's is 25, and re-rolls to prevent harm from using such items only have to be taken daily. For example, a the DC for a chaotic good black paladin to emulate chaotic evil is 25, if he tried to emulate neutral evil, the DC would be 30, like normal.

Detect Evil (Sp): At will, a black paladin can use detect evil, as the spell.

Smite Evil (Su): Once per day, a black paladin may attempt to smite evil with one normal melee attack. He adds his Charisma bonus (if any) to his attack roll and deals 1 extra point of damage per black paladin level. If the black paladin accidentally smites a creature that is not evil, the smite has no effect, but the ability is still used up for that day.

At 5th level, and at every five levels thereafter, the paladin may smite evil one additional time per day, as indicated on Table: The Paladin, to a maximum of five times per day at 20th level.

Divine Grace (Su): At 2nd level, a paladin gains a bonus equal to his Charisma bonus (if any) on all saving throws.

Formidable Will (Ex): A black paladin gains a +2 on all will saves vs evil, this ability stacks with any other affect on the black paladin.

Special Mount (Sp): Upon reaching 6th level, a Black Paladin gains the service of an unusually intelligent, strong, and loyal steed to serve him in her crusade against evil (see below). This mount is usually a heavy warhorse (for a Medium paladin) or a warpony (for a Small black paladin).

Once per day, as a full-round action, a paladin may magically call her mount from the celestial realms in which it resides. However, the Paladin may choose to forgo the celestial mount in favor of a fiendish or abyssal mount, chosen from creatures inhabiting darker realms. This ability is the equivalent of a spell of a level equal to one-third the black paladin’s level. The mount immediately appears adjacent to the paladin and remains for 2 hours per black paladin level; it may be dismissed at any time as a free action. The mount is the same creature each time it is summoned, though the black paladin may release a particular mount from service.

Each time the mount is called, it appears in full health, regardless of any damage it may have taken previously. The mount also appears wearing or carrying any gear it had when it was last dismissed. Calling a mount is a conjuration (calling) effect.

Should the paladin’s mount die, it immediately disappears, leaving behind any equipment it was carrying. The black paladin may not summon another mount for thirty days or until she gains a paladin level, whichever comes first, even if the mount is somehow returned from the dead. During this thirty-day period, the paladin takes a +1 bonus to weapon damage rolls but suffer a -2 penalty to all saving rolls.

Ex-Black Paladins[edit]

A black paladin that falls to the ways of wickedness loses all black paladin spells and abilities and cannot progress further as a black paladin. They may recover all that if they atone, however, should they fail to uphold the code again, they are considered too weak to walk The Path. Fallen black paladins are hunted to protect the secrecy of the order.

Campaign Information[edit]

Playing a Black Paladin[edit]

Religion: Black paladins worship good deities, as that divine power is shielding them from their dark magic. Many of them are fiercely religious for this reason. Some black paladins revere the Light itself, but any good deity is valid.

Other Classes: Any non-evil character is another potential ally against the forces of darkness, black paladins cooperate with them towards this end. Paladins and black paladins may disagree on some of the finer points of their creeds.

Combat: A black paladin aggressively attacks evil, only bothering to tend or defend the wounded when necessary (or not smiting evil).

Advancement: Many black paladins become clerics to expand their spell casting options.

Black Paladins in the World[edit]

Daily Life: A typical day in the life of a black paladin is spent in meditation and prayer, as well as combat and magic training. Though they often go questing for evil to destroy.

Notables: Black paladins are few in number, and shun fame, so famous black paladins are few in number, if any.

Organizations: Black paladins can either be found in their hidden monasteries, or deep in the dungeon of some force of evil. There is frequently healthy competition between questing black paladins.

NPC Reactions: As the order is rather secretive, and rare, most people don't even know they exist.
