Arcane Sword[edit]

The Arcane Sword holds true versatility, able to smite foes with wizardly might or blade.

Making an Arcane Sword[edit]

<-Strong points and weak points, and effectiveness with party members.->.

Abilities: Strength and Dexterity are most important for this class. An Intelligence score of 14 is needed to cast their most powerful spells, and an Int of 11 is needed to cast any Arcane Sword spells at all.

Races: Due to their fondness for magic and swordplay, elves often take up this class. In fact, they often claim to have invented it. Due to their mixed heritage, Half-Elves often take up this class as well, perhaps because they see it as a reflection of their own mixed nature. Humans, while rarely Arcane Swords, are some of the most creative of all. If your campaign has them, Warforged may have taken levels in this class as well, seeking to expand their skills. Other races rarely become Arcane Swords.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Arcane Sword:

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: All Simple and Martial Weapons, Light armor, and Bucklers.

Bonus Feat: Arcane Sword can choose feats from Fighter Bonus Feats or Metamagic Feats. Arcane Sword must still meet all prerequisites for a bonus feat, including ability score and base attack bonus minimums.

Read Magic (Sp): Arcane Sword can use Read Magic at will.

Arcane Warding(Ex): An Arcane Sword gains a magical field of knowledge that protects him/her as an innate bonus to their Deflection modifier to AC. Because this is an innate bonus, drawn from study and training, and not a magical enhancement bonus, it stacks with a magical deflection bonus, such as that from a Ring or Cloak of Protection. It still does not allow you to gain a deflection bonus from more than one item. This bonus begins at third level and increases every six levels. At 3rd level the bonus is 3, 9th level 4, and finally 15th level at 5.

Armored Mage I(Ex): At fourth level, when an Arcane Sword first learns to cast spells, their hard work begins to pay off. They can ignore the arcane spell failure chance from light armor and bucklers.

Armored Mage II(Ex): At eighth level, this feature extends to medium armor, as well as light shields. Heavy shields have their spell failure rate lowered to 5% (which can be overcome by mithral or the twilight property). Even so, most (but certainly not all) Arcane Swords prefer light armor and bucklers, due to the AC gains being minimal and the lower movement penalty of the lighter armors.

Arcane Mount(Sp): Beginning at fifth level, an Arcane Sword can use Mount as the spell three times per day. The caster level is equal to the users Arcane Sword level.

Greater Mount(Su): At 10th level, the mount improves to the equivalent of a Phantom Steed. It takes a full-round action to summon, can be called 3/day, and only one can be in existence at a time. Its special movement and duration are tracked as if you were a wizard of your Arcane Sword class level.

Spells Known: Arcane Swords prepare their spells each morning, just as wizards do. However, they do not use spellbooks. At each level that they gain a new spell level, they gain Spell Focus as a bonus feat. This allows them to learn new spells equal to their Int modifier (min 1) during level up, in the same way as a Wizard would. They can select this feat normally to gain more spells if they so wish.

Spells: Arcane Swords rely on Intelligence for their spellcasting. An Arcane Sword has a caster level equal to 1/2 of their class level. Arcane Swords choose their spells from the following list:

1st—Any Sor/Wiz that is not Divination, Transmutation, or Enchantment.

2nd—Any Sor/Wiz that is not Divination, Transmutation, or Enchantment.

3rd—Any Sor/Wiz that is not Divination, Transmutation, or Enchantment.

4th—Any Sor/Wiz that is not Divination, Transmutation, or Enchantment.

Campaign Information[edit]

Playing an Arcane Sword[edit]

Religion: Most Arcane Swords worship Boccob or some other god of magic, or no deity at all

Other Classes: Arcane Swords get along best with Wizards, Fighters, and Duskblades. They react to Sorcerers about the same way Wizards do (never-ending arguments about magical theory). Other classes they can get along fine with, but no right from the start.

Combat: Distract enemies in melee or take magical potshots from behind other primary melee combatants.

Advancement: Arcane Swords rarely multiclass, but when they do, they usually take levels in Fighter (to improve their combat skill) or Wizard (to improve their skill with magic).

NPC Reactions: Unless their magic is used or otherwise revealed, most commoners assume Arcane Swords to be warriors or fighters. If their magic is brought to light, however, they are just as likely to be mistaken for Duskblades, Spellswords, Warmages, or multiclass Wizard/Fighters (or other similar class) as they are to be correctly identified as an Arcane Sword (or unidentified, as commoners (except in Eberron or other magic-infused campaign) usually don't even know the difference between a wizard and a sorcerer, after all). Wizards usually initially react as they would to a Spellsword or Duskblade (combination awe/fear at mixed magic/swordplay), but quickly find a lot in common with the equally sage-minded Arcane Sword. Sorcerers start the same way, but generally grow to treat them as they do wizards (constant bickering and arguing of which of them uses the superior magic). Fighters too begin as such, but find as much in common with them as do Wizards. Paladins, who themselves sword and magic (albeit divine) often have the best initial reaction to an Arcane Sword. Psionics-wielders still see magic as a crutch for the mind, but can quickly become friends with them (especially when the Arcane Sword often saves their bacon).

Arcane Sword Lore[edit]

Characters with ranks in Knowledge (Arcana) can research Arcane Swords to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.

<-the appropriate skills->
DC Result
5 Arcane Swords mix swordplay with wizardry.
10 Arcane Swords are sometimes mistaken for Spellswords, due to their likeness of mind.
15 Arcane Swords more closely resemble Duskblades than Spellswords in the way they address their magic and personality.
