Aligrine[edit]

We are not harpies. Or aarakocra. Or sirens. Just... we're aligrine ok?!

Physical Description[edit]

From Guild Wars 2

Any aligrine is remarkably similar to that of a human, albeit with an unusually fair complexion and slender frame. They tend to be slightly taller and thinner than humans, and often have hair and eyes of unusual matching, but soft hues—pale yellow, light green, auburn, and others. Most notably, however, are the magnificent pair of feathered wings on the back of every aligrine, positioned above the scapula. These wings usually bear feathers of the same hue as the aligrine's hair and eyes, but may resemble the wings of other creatures depending upon one's heritage.

History[edit]

The aligrine were a cousin of the raptoran who worshipped the same gods of air and flight as custom of many who were grateful fliers. However, as a result of some territorial conflict among the aeries, there was war between the two swift relatives. Their battles overtook much of their corner in the Elemental Plane of Air, and one of the gods intervened and forced them to ground themselves. The aligrine were expelled from the Plane whilst the raptoran were cursed with lesser flight. As a result, in their new home on the Material Plane, the aligrine despise their former allies and travel about restlessly, waiting for the day the gods may reconsider their exile. Others curse the gods and turned away altogether, eager to make their new fortunes in a new land.

Society[edit]

Aligrine tend to be nomadic and impermanent, favoring freedom over the power and security of large settlements. They generally form temporary settlements in trees, mountains, or other places out of reach from most predators, and survive through hunting and gathering.

Generally, aligrines are intolerant of other races, xenophobic, and whenever possible stick to their own kind. Humans and halflings, in particular, are generally seen as inferior counterparts due to being physiologically similar to aligrines, but lacking wings. Those of this race tend to be similarly condescending towards most other terrestrial races. Only begrudgingly are aarakockra or angelic beings to be peers, but aligrines even then prefer to avoid intermingling of any sort. But they have special treatment towards their long-hated relatives, as well as a divisive apathy towards their old gods.

Aligrine Names[edit]

Aligrine names are not gendered to the ears at first. Females tend to have more syllables, though both types of names vary in the same range of length.
